kern is difficult because they usually have only one start date, so lots of students are competing for those slots. however, it is still first come first serve and gpa/usmle scores have nothing to do with placement there for cores.

as far as i know, no. You have to have a passed step I, but a 182 will let you start!

the atlantic health care system is new as a core since i started, so i don't know about them.

they tell you to take the step early so you can get your permanent placement letter, but they send the list of eligible students to the respective NJ hospitals, en masse- for my class that was around the 3rd week in april- so i (who appealed for NJ) and those that had a prelim placement all got our permanent letters at the same time. Don't push yourself to take step I early if you are NOT ready - better to take later and pas then take it "on time" for the NJ deadline and not pass- that, in the long run will delay you more.
Spots open up in NJ because, people decide to wait longer to take the test, or unfortunately, don't pass - the only ones that don't start in NY or elsewhere(except Kern) are those that decide to take longer or don't pass- those with pending scores can start.

Thanks Rokshana.
How long does it take to get your USMLE scores? I am going to be back from vinnies mid May, and plan on taking a 2 month kaplan coarse probably a few days after I get home. If I take the USMLE during the last week of July or the first week of Aug will that be too late? When do NJ rotations usually start in Aug, I plan on doing them in Barnabas if that helps.

Thanks a lot for any info.

The school usually recommends taking the USMLE no later than July 15th to ensure you can start in NJ.

Well, they said for us to take it by march 15 for permanent placement, but i know people who took it the last week in april and were still able to get placement in NJ (started may 22).

RJ, when its slow, reporting is about 3 weeks, but when its busy (ie when the US students are taking it during may and june) it can take 6-8 weeks.

barnabas usually starts later than others- 1st-2nd week of sept i think, so even the last week of july is probably a safe bet.
