Anyone know anything about Coney Island?
Hello,
I'm a 5th termer in St. Vincent and was wanting to go to NY for rotations. the only problem is that i can't really find anything on Coney Island hospital, any information about it, whether it's good or not...i don't want to request the other hospitals in NY and then get stuck with Coney Island if it really sucks or is bad. Any tips or reviews of ANY hospitals in the NY/NJ area from SGU students/grads? (oh yeah, we don't have Methodist or Maimonides, in NY our choices are: Jamaica, Brooklyn, and Coney Island) thanks! |

Well you've probably read this but this is from SGU's site on Coney Island hospital:
Core Rotations Offered: Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/ Gynecology and Psychiatry. Electives Available: Medicine Sub I, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Radiology, Urology, Orthopedic Surgery, Surgery Sub I, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics/Gynecology Sub I, Anesthesia, Dermatology, Primary Care, Oncology, Advanced Pediatrics and Vascular/Thoracic Surgery. http://www.sgu.edu/website/sguwebsit...oneyIsland.htm There is also the hospital's website itself: http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/hhc/htm...eyisland.shtml And you say that you only have 3 choices for NY??? What happened to the rest of the affiliated hospitals? To answer the questions about Coney: I am form New york and the area around the hospital ranges from utter crap to pretty nice. Additionally its a one subway ride from the city and you could if you wanted to live by the beach. I would advice against bathing in it though. As far as the hospital goes I can only go on hearsay: My cousin, an SGU grad, said it was not bad as far as teaching, OB/GYN and surgery I heard were quite good. Additionally I have a few friends rotating through there and they say they are receivin excellant hand on exposure. |

just a comment on the "its a one subway ride from the city and you could if you wanted to live by the beach." remark. its more like an hour on the subway from the coney island stop into manhattan. just don't want you to think you are right outside manhattan. the coney island stop is actaully the last one on the line. so it will be a hard commute at night if you plan on living far from the hospital.
also, coney island hospital has recently being going thru some admin trouble..(they were recently fined for medicare fraud etc...).so...fyi...i'm sure its a good teaching hospital...but that might play a factor into you're thinking.... |
