Salutations "atuva06":

You have a good chance of getting admitted into any of these Caribbean schools. I have gotten accepted to all of these schools but opted for Saba for various reasons. I believe that someone in the January 2006 semester was admitted with similar statistics as yours. You may want to check out that thread. I believe he went to UC Berkeley. Keep in mind that these schools will look at your entire package, not just your numbers. Many students have families and are the non-traditional medical students. Thus, I feel you will be given an opportunity when you apply. I think you will at least get into some of these schools. Of course, this is not a guarantee or anything. If you can, take some science courses and boost up your GPA a little more and your chances will be better. With Saba, you don't even have to submit your MCATs if you don't want to. However, if you did well on the test, then submit it as it will bolster your application. Apply as soon as possible since with the recent approval of California, the number of applicants applying to Saba has increased dramatically. Good luck on your endeavors. Ciao.

Hi all, I really need some advice. What are my chances with an overall GPA of 3.682 and Science GPA of 3.481 and MCAT score of 14N? Thanks!

Thumbs up Response.

Salutations "Dawn Spring":

Wow, you have quite an impressive overall and science GPA. Why the low MCAT score? In either case, you do not have to report your MCAT score to Saba when you apply. With those grades, good letters of recommendation, and some volunteer experience, I would say you definitely will get into a semester (which one depends on you). Good luck and let us know how it goes for you. Ciao.

re: chances of getting to med school

Hello there guys,

This is in response to both Dawn spring and autv06. I think it takes lots of commitment and great work ethic for someone to choose a Caribbean school, finish the program successfully, pass the boards, and get a residency in the US. Getting into the school is not the most difficult part. As I said, very few people decide to leave so far from their family, friends and home to persuit their dreams. If you imagine that out of every ten applicant to the medical school in your local area, only about one is so passionate , then you can think of your chance of getting to Caribbean med school ten times more than any med shcool in the U.S. or Canada. In other words, you're very likey to be accepted as long as you have some decent grades. I don't think MCAT or volunteer works are that much needed. But if you prepare for the MCAT it's for your own good. It helps you later on with your studies in med school.

Cheers,

edm

corpsman 2,

I say you write a letter to admissions and explain what happened in year one. Your grades in other years look good to me. Take some courses in Microbio, Biochem, or Anatomy. Apply early and write a good essay. You can try applying to more than one school in Caribbean if you want. I guess you probably have a moderatly good chance to Saba, and an excellent one for Spartan. Although Spartan has an accelerated program I personally think Saba or other 4-year schools can prepare you better for usmle.

hope that helps,

e.d.m

Talking I would say

just apply!! you only have to lose $50 bucks. I took this same advice so I turned in my application last week. Gardner sent me an email saying that the application was complete and that they were going to process it last friday or today. I am not sure if my stats are good enough but hey it is better to just apply and see if I can improve my application in any way by them providing some recommendations in case of denial. I know they keep your paperwork for about one year so a lot can be done in one year ( eg. studying for the mighty MCAT and geting a good score to offset you low GPA). MY advice ......just send it in!!!! Good luck
