Hey

Okay RIFSTER, when you get back to the island, find Bay in MED 1 (really short kid with glasses... lol)... he can answer this question from personal experience. Or if you know Nitin in 5th, find him and have him point out Bay. Tell either of em that Val sent you, and that I can't wait till I see them in Clinicals!

Val

caribean admissions

You may want to go over to the Ross site, and go to the thread 'how non-competitive is Ross anyway'... an excellent post there by their dean of Admissions.

It's really important for me to transfer for family reasons - basically I really need to stay in the NY area for rotations and residency.

Thanks to anyone who can answer this and enjoy the break people.

You should double-check with NY. Apparently Med boards do not look favorably on people transferring medical schools -- especially Carribean medical schools. Additionally--even if transferring is okay, it may not be okay if some of your education was at a non-approved medical school--that might be enough to prevent you from getting your license in NY.

I'm no expert; I may not have it right -- but better to check first than to be sorry.

what are my chances?

Hi. I was just accepted to St. James, but I would really like to go to Saba because my province has different rules for IMGs. I only have a 2.88 but it has always been above 3.0 except for my previous semester because I was working almost full time. I have tons of volunteer experience, research experience, excellent references, and I am very passionate about a career in medicine. Is the may sessions still open? Do you think I should risk not going to St. James where I am accepted and wait until Sept. to go to Saba?

Yes, definitely apply to Saba first. With NY and CA approval and superior USMLE pass rates Saba is light years ahead of St. James. St. James will always accept you, anytime, for the forseeable future. It's not as competitive as Saba for a reason.

I myself applied to several offshore medical schools such as Xavier, St. James and St. Christopher....and I had a similar GPA as you ......and I worked almost full time hours during my University studies.....I got accepted to all the schools I applied but I wasn't comfortable going to schools like Xavier, St James and St. Christopher’s...who had no graduates practicing in US or Canada......and the schools are bit shady too when it comes on to getting license in U.S..states. I then made my mind to apply to the big three and Saba was my first attempt.....mainly because is was way cheaper then SGU, AUC and Ross.......and they offered me admission in May 2005.....and not to mention I applied in August......but I decided that its way better to go to the big 4 : SGU, Saba, AUC and Ross then to go to other shady and new medical schools......so I got myself a good job and will start this May 2005........the best way is to do research about the schools.....you can check out the following site to give you some insight:

Hope this helps,

Siddman

Hey Siddman

Hey Siddman,

Did you take the MCAT? Cause I'm trying to apply for this September and probably will not have an MCAT score to submit, since I won't take the test till August.

Thanks

Nope...i did not take MCAT....but if you are applying to september term...which is a bit more competitive then jan and may......you should atleast let them know that you are going to take MCAT and will send them the score later......ifyour GPA does not allow you to get a spot in sep....they might or might not give you a conditional acceptance for sep 2005 just to see how you do in your MCAT........but that is jsut me saying they might do that.....you have to go through your interview and explain them or may be request for sep spot in your interview......

Wish you all the best,

Siddman

I wouldn't count you out with those stats, but you might not be a "lock"
The "what are my chances" thread at the top of the Saba forum is a good guide for what stats are usually good. They'd probably look at the difficulty of classes taken, what reasons you had for not getting a higher GPA (like working nights full time like I did), etc.
Personally, if I had less than a 3.0 I'd take the MCAT just to be safe, because I'm chicken like that. One can always apply, and if not accepted can find out straight from the horse's mouth what needs to be improved, losing only the application fee. I don't get the feeling that Saba black-balls anybody who has to re-apply. (That's just my opinion, not based on anything but my dealings with the admissions people.)
