saba - the facts to know!

Hi everyone,

I just thought having looked at so many of these questions that people put to the forum about how people do one the boards that I would help. well , having talked to various people and friends, most of the april class has done very well with quite a few scores in the mid 220 there has been even a 251. all these people took the kaplan course. All have said that Saba prepared them well, and that there was nothing that they felt that they had not learnt before. two of my friends have just start there clinicals in NY and they very happy with them. I have 2 semesters left and I feel that I am being taught well. Not all professors are equal in teaching skill (like in all medical schools) I would say 8/10 proffessor are good and 5/10 professors are the some of the best proffesor that you well get any where. most classes have 45 students which allows students to actually have a relationship with the profs, unlike lots of other schools that have 100+students per class. the island is small, the people are great, and I can not think of a better place to study and believe me you will do a lot of that. On average we lose about 4-5 students in the 1st semester, and this is normaly due to either bad study skills or the realization that med school is not for them. Most students here are highly motivated and intelligent and happy with there situation here. about the shelf exams, each semster takes one ie. physio, micro/immuno, pharm, and path, these exams count about 13% of your final and 98% of students pass easily, these exams are a very good indicator of how people do on the usmle. Since saba has start the shelf exam students have recieved scores comparable or better, to that of stateside med schools. Any way I know this posting is a mess of facts but I thought that they may help answer some questions.

cheers

thank you

When you say students took the Kaplan course and scored well on the USMLE, are you referring to the Kaplan review session given by the school during the 5th semester or a seperate Kaplan review session, probably attended by students after the 5th semester?

Also, do you have any suggestions on deferrment of undergraduate student loans? Because SABA does not receive Stafford loans, it makes auto deferrment of loans accumulated as an undergrad difficult... some alow it some don't. Advice please!

loans

about loan deferral...typically, even if the offshore school offers student loans, it is difficult to get a deferral. however, you have 3 years of economic hardship and 3 years of unemployment deferral that you can use. talk to your lender, and they will give you the down-low...
