Roundtrip Tickets with American Airline

To All Saba Students:

I just finished talking to an American Airline agent and she told me that "any American Citizen traveling outside of the US must have a roundtrip ticket." I don't know if this is only true for American Airline or all the Airlines. I just want to relay this information to everyone to save you an extra hassel when you get to San Juan via AA.

Has anyone travel via AA without having to buy a roundtrip ticket?

You should tell the Gardner office about that, as should I. AA is giving students a hard time about the round trip ticket, not letting us get 1 way tickets. I think once you get your residence permit from Saba you don't have to buy round trip anymore, but it's a good idea to follow up on this.

Question.

Salutations:

Has anyone been successful in purchasing a 1-way ticket to Saba with any other airline besides AMERICAN AIRLINES without being asked for a roundtrip one? I looked at US Airways and they do not have to make a stop at San Juan so perhaps they will not require a roundtrip ticket. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow about this, but in the meantime, if anyone has any response, it would be appreciated. Ciao.

I was able to buy a one-way on AA. LAX -DFW-San Juan - SXM.

If they try and make me buy a ticket off the Island, it will just be to San Juan

Wolfvgang22,

I actually talked to Gardner and they told me to contact the airline. So I don't know what else we can do except skip AA airline or buy the roundtrip ticket if being asked to do so. I think I will buy a American Airways ticket. It is a little bit more expensive but I don't have to stop at San Juan. For me, it would be from Minneapolis to Charllotte, NC to SXM. I looked at the price from Minneapolis to Saba and it costs around $625 for a one way ticket. I think it is a good deal. If I take AA airline I will have to stay overynight in SXM and that will cost at least $120, according to some postings. So that turns out to be about the same amount of money. Man..man...man...med. school in outside of the US...is rough...

That's exactly what I did. I bought a refundable ticket to San Juan at the counter with my credit card, and then I got online as soon as I got here and had AA give me a refund. Pain in the butt.

Flights

I flew US Airways most of the time and I bought a one way ticket when I went down.

Response.

Salutations:

Thanks for responding everyone. I called American Airlines today and the lady informed me that the airline does not care if you have a one way ticket or a roundtrip ticket. However, once you arrive on the island itself, they might care. I asked her if it would be okay for me to just purchase a one way ticket to SXM, and she said it would be no problem. However, once I do get to SXM, the people over there may ask me for a roundtrip ticket since I am not a resident. Since I will be making a stop at SXM on my way to Saba, did anyone have any problems at SXM airport? I know many have stated that they didn't encounter any problems, so I am hoping I won't either. Thanks. Ciao.

Tickets

You should have a letter in your packet that states you will be a temporary resident and that you are attending school down there. If anyone questions you then show them that letter.

I had the same problem at SJU along with Wolfgang and this other girl in our class. Me and the girl showed that letter saying that we were going to be students, but the people behind the counter made us buy tickets anyways. The tickets were refundable online so it wasn't that bad. Although, at the time I felt like I was being scammed.
