State License Info for Saba

Saba University wrote in their residency booklet:

“For Saba graduates: Arkansas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Missouri, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Texas have special requirements. Colorado and New Mexico are also difficult states.

You cannot do residency in California or Kansas.”

Well, I contacted the State Medical Boards of above listed states. Here are the responses I got back:

Arkansas

There is no training license in Arkansas. (Therefore no requirements for a training license, since there is none!)

Illinois

Please refer to the temporary medical application packet on the website. The AF-MED and ED-NON forms refer to foreign education requirements in detail. The application form is available at www.ildpr.com

PRFGROUP05@ildpr.com

Pennsylvania

The Board's requirements for licensure are completion of 4 academic years of medical school, 4000 hours of medical instruction and 72 weeks of approved clinical rotations. If the rotations are completed in the United States they must ALL be completed in ACGME Approved programs.

PA State Board of Medicine, samatter@state.pa.us

North Carolina

To be eligible for a NC resident training license you must have your MD degree (4 years of medical school required by law) and a current standard ECFMG certificate. Currently the NC Medical Board does not have any requirements regarding clinical clerkships.
Joy D. Cooke, Director of Licensing, NC Medical Board, Joy.Cooke@NCMEDBOARD.ORG

Missouri

Our Practice Act can be found on the internet at: www.ded.state.mo.us/pr/healarts

pcastlem@mail.state.mo.us

New Jersey

New Jersey requires at least 4 wks in each of the core rotations to be done at an ACGME program which has a residency program in the same area as the rotation.

Massachusetts

In order to apply for a training license in Massachusetts, you will first need to be accepted into a training program. We require Saba graduates provide a competed E-1 form and E-2 verifications from each rotation. These requirements are defined in our Board Regulations, which can be found at 2.02 here:
www.massmedboard.org/regs.htm

Jason.Gerlack@state.ma.us

Texas

(Texas requires that ALL 72 wks of rotations be done at ACGME hospitals.)

Colorado

Here is the link to training license information: www.dora.state.co.us/medical/main-training.htm

Danise.Hayes@dora.state.co.us

New Mexico

SABA Univ is on a list of Univ that is not recognized by our Board. You can obtain permission to train, but would not be eligible for professional licensure in this state once you completed your ACGME program. The rules may change in the future, but that is the situation at this time.

JSparkma@salud.unm.edu

California

Saba graduates are NOT eligible to enter residency training programs in California at this time.

Saba recently passed the paperwork review phase of California's medical school review process, and the Board's Division of Licensing members directed staff to begin arranging the site inspection to Saba University. The Licensing members suggested a general timeframe of early December 2003 for the trips.

Pat Park, Foreign Schools Liaison, Medical Board of California, PPark@medbd.ca.gov

Kansas

SABA is NOT an acceptable school at this time for licensure in Kansas.

Charlene K. Abbott, Licensing Administrator, Kansas State Board, cabbott@ink.org

New York

Yes, as of (recently) Saba Graduates ARE eligible to do residency in New York State. There is no training license in NY and there are no required clinical rotations.

medbd@mail.nysed.gov

NOTE: YOU MUST VERIFY ALL THIS! The contact info for all these states is at: www.fsmb.org/members.htm

Texas

Isn't it also true for texas that you can't go there if you did your clinicals there?
