I MATCHED!!!

Finally, Canada admits another Canadian for residency. I matched in EM/Family Med combined program. Got the news today. If any of you have any questions, feel free to email me at dralsaigh@hotmail.com, or to ask on this forum. Saba has been a bizarre and at times disheartening expereince. Not the school per se, just the whole foreign medical school expereince. What made it worse was the stuiped and uncecessary burdens they place on foreigners in Canada. However, it was all said and done and there is a happy ending for me in this. I hope you all get what you want in the end. I can't say it was easy by any imaginable way, but it was strengthening and worth it. Good luck fellow Sabans.

Basil,
You made it. 7 long tough years of med school and you have finally reached your dream!! (Just kidding about the 7 years, It just seemed that long)
Are you staying at home or where are you going? If you ever get down here to the Cuse, look me up.
Congrats again.

Some more info

I matched in Regina, in SK. Canada seemed impossible, but thanks to SUSOM facilitating many of my electives in Canada, I was a competitive applicant at the end of the day.

The other thing is, its just coincidental you would say East or SK in as far as getting residencies. I have alumni friends from Saba who are in Mannitoba, Dal, Memorial, SK, BC and one in Ontario through this recent IMG ontario program.

I only wrote the EE exam, and the TOEFL and TSE of course.

But Ive done a bunch of other stuff, like research at Western, member of the CFPC, attended handful of CME events, been to 3 national conferences and did electives in all the disciplines that PGY-1 residents of FP rotate through. I have a handful of electives in Canada, spread out over 2 1/2 years of hell. Haha!

My PS was excellent, to say the least - and Im being modest. I got very positive comments about it in 3 of my 4 interviews.

Overall, the best option for any Caribbean grad who wants Canada but who wants to keep the US as a viable option is Saba. We have the highest number of grads in residencies in Canada, which ultimatley is a big factor, considerring that most PD dont know your school unless they have trained one of your alumni in their program and they are happy with them.

For now, I think Ill sip some cocktails and try to ponder on what has happened for the past 4 years. Actually, I need a bit more than a 'few' concktails to absorb it.

I plan on visiting Saba for a week sometime in May. Ill see some of you there, and for the rest, good luck and good choice. Stick it out.
