What to bring to SAba?

I am planning to start for the September semester, but i would like to know ahead a time, what to bring to the island as far as supplies, food, etc. I am also aware that Saba is located in a hurricane region, i just want to know what you will need in the case of a huricane or a prolonged storm. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

For a hurricane, you really don't need much: water, food that doesn't require cooking, flashlights and batteries, and maybe a battery powered radio.

The school is a hurricane shelter, and many homes are built to withstand them also (concrete roofs). The 'quaint' shutters on all the windows are there for hurricanes.

Also, since Saba is the top of a volcano, there is little flooding like you see in New Orleans. The airport is 135 feet above sea level and there are only 2 or 3 houses below it on that side, and nobody lives in Ft. Bay (the other low point). Not much of a concern.

As far as what to bring: do a search.

Medication Questions

Hey guys
I did a search of the Saba posts and have not seen anything on this since like 2005 so I thought that I would throw it out there for some "current" information.
How hard is it to get medication on the island? What do we do about controlled substances that the pharmacies will only dispense in 30 day supplies?
How does eneryone else do medication supplies for their stay on Saba?
Thanks Guys!!!!!!

The Rxs you can get here are really variable. They have a lot of general medications, from what I have heard. I have only gotten pain medications and antibiotics prescribed.
Bring as much from home as you can. If you absolutely cannot get more than a certain supply at one time, I would make sure a friend or family membrane can fill your Rxs for you and just have them ship them to you. It's pretty affordable (and quick service) to have packages Fed-Ex-ed to the school through the University Bookstore Online.

Another alternative would be to call the hospital and see if they have the medication here or if they can order it from SXM. But I would go for the former - you don't want too many people knowing your business!

You have breaks every 3 months so refill your prescriptions at home.

What kind of computer are you bringing?

Fellow classmates former, current and future-

A Mac-o-phile myself, although I plan on buying another notebook computer before I start in May 2008, I have reserves about purchasing another Mac because of potential service issues on the island.

I've searched old threads and based on what I was reading, I was thinking of the Lenovo 61x or tablet PC version, though I'm suspicious as to the actual usefulness of paying the extra $$ for a tablet if all the lecture notes are Powerpoint anyway. They seem the most reasonably priced and durable. Does anyone (current or future) have thoughts on other reliable computers and printers?

Any new insight or comments are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
