Anyone know how much extra time and how useful the Masters in Hyperbaeric medicine is at SABA? It sounds cool and I wonder if the extra work would pay off at some point.

I think it sounds very interesting KDog. Pressure is good.
Hey KDog,
The masters is an extra class a semester for three semesters. You have a research project to do at some point. The class was meeting once a week when I was looking at it.
If I remember I'll try to find the e-mail addy for the guy who heads up the program (or just get it directly from him) and he could answer all of your questions.
As for right now the school's still waiting on the dang chamber we bought.... It was supposed to be here last month.

That would be great Swinginislanddoc,
From what I have been reading recently it sounds very interesting. I like to dive but I am a "bleeder". For some reason (it is not mask squeeze) the superficial capillaries in my nasal meatus ruptures and my mask fills with blood. I have been afraid to dive again since then. I felt like shark bait. Ever heard of that?
511 points And I was planning on taking the open diver course at sea saba! Thanks for the shark attack images!!

Kdog,
Funny you should mention that - that happened to me on my first deep dive. Well, my mask didn't fill up, but there was quite a bit of it in the nosepiece of my mask when I came up. A friend back home, who's an avid diver (been over 50 times now, goes on vacation to dive hotspots, etc) said the same happened to him - someone gave him a Sudafed before a dive and it stopped it - now he always takes one before he dives. Before the last time I went I used Afrin nasal spray, not for congestion (which, as you know, is a no-no in diving) but to prevent the bleeding - been fine since then.
Ducman, take the course!! It's worth it! Don't worry about the sharks - most of the sea life around here couldn't give a flying flip about the divers. The sealife here has not been harassed as they have in other parts of the world, so they pretty just just look at you for a bit and then swim away. I've had two recent incidents while out snorkeling when a rather large baraccuda swam up with its big ugly teeth sticking out, following us around. Turns out in both instances the person I would be out snorkeling with was wearing something shiney. As fast as those suckers can move and considering we were in their territory, I'm pleased to announce I still possess all of the appendages God blessed me with. (I may not be able to spell well, though - that's for other reasons :P )
The whole point it, GET THE HECK OUT THERE INTO THE WATER! You'll be living in one of the top dive sites in the world AND you'll get resident discounts - TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT!!!
I shall now step down off of my e-soap box.

Thanks for the advice, I never wanted to give it up so I will certainly get back under water, bait or no bait.
Hey ~S, maybe you shouldn't trespass into their territory. It seems like one of those enzymatic eqilibrium/kinetics (you remember Mr. Le Chatelier's) principes, if you add a stress (aka you) to a system at dynamic equilibrium, then the equilibrium will shift to alleviate the stress (you will be eaten by the barracuda- no more stress). Maybe they should have this principle in the divers manual. Or maybe you shouldn't wear shinny things, one or the other
.

There is stress everywhere and everthing shifts all the time and we are still here. I always thought that was kind of a bogus chemistry principle. Baracuda's are actually pretty lazy so I think it would take a little more than kinetics to make them hungry. Maybe you bring a bucket of 2.0 M NaHNO3 down with you just to shift it back to the R (or is it L?). On the other hand maybe I am in trouble!
How can you say that dynamic equilibrium is a bogus concept. (I'm gonna vote you off the island if we can do that!) It is the most plesiomorphic way to explain the way things change in order to maintain a steady state. I'm not altogether sure that this is a buisness principle though (does the rich man get richer as the poor man get poorer?). So what do you think happens when stress is added to a system; do you think entropy just increases until we all internally/or externally combust?
