Food - Local meats, produce, etc.

Hello,

I am an entering student here in May '09 and have some basic questions regarding diet and nutrition on Saba.

Firstly, what fruits and vegetables are locally grown on Saba and is it available to purchase or work for? And I am sure produce is brought in from St Marten or elsewhere and I am wondering what other produce is available in the grocery stores... Additionally, is the produce covered with pesticides/herbicides/fungicides? Are organics available? Do they even use industrial farming methods or is it all locally grown, small scale?

Also, what small scale farmed meats are available from the locals? Fish, I am sure, but perhaps goat and chicken?

I am trying to determine what the heck I will be eating and maintaining my health with for the next 20 months and any help is greatly appreciated.

dude, worry about med school rather than organically grown chicken first.

ps i am a health nut, big on lifting weights, eating a clean diet, running and looking ridiculously good on the beach with my shirt off. saba will offer you no problems in regards to diet or exercise

Saad,

Thank you for taking the time to respond and thank you for the sincere advice.

You spent 20 months on Saba. From your experience, can you tell me what fruits and vegetables are available at the groceries, especially from local production or organics? Is there a source of "halal" meat, or at least locally raised/produced?

Thanks,
AZ

theres a bunch of mango trees around, you can probably pick those. there is a wide selection of fruits and vegetables to purchase however they are pricey as they have to be shipped in and due to shipping times they can run out the day or two before the next boat arrives so dont rely on it.
Yes there is halal chicken, im not sure bout beef or anything else and there is also a good selection of seafood. However, meat is also expensive as it has to be refrigerated on the boat and the island and electricity can be pricey on a reclusive island like saba. But like i said try and worry more about doing well in your classes, people have been going to saba for years now and eating healthy and staying healthy...that will take care of itself.
