    medicine shelf

    Advertisements

What is the best way to study for the medicine shelf? Being Q4 on my call schedule, every four days either short call (7am-till whenever we are finished usually 6-7pm) and long call (9am-the next day whenever we are finished usually 3pm the next day), I am just trying to keep up with my patient load, my sleep, and food!! What books are good to have with me when I have some downtime? I have Step Up to Medicine, but is this enough? Do i really need the MSKAP question book? and what question set is the best? UW or Exam Master? unfortunately with my schedule, I feel like I only have time to do one set, and hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the butt.also, I felt like the psych shelf had a lot of questions pertaining to medicine...so does the medicine shelf dive into other topics that you feel should on other shelves? ahhhh...thanks everyone. now it's time to see if I can sneak in some nap time in the library...gotta gear up for short call tomorrow.

    Q4 Call?

Wherever that Q4 call hospital is, please put it at the bottom of any list you make. Talk about your dinosaurs!

first off relax this isnt a 'shelf' exam its just an exam made by a 3rd party for whatever licensure reasons our school wants. second off, at least a third of the questions you'll have no idea about cuz all the tests are like it.

Step Up is a great book, if you read this or the Kaplan Lec Notes you'll be fine. In my opinion you should save UW for before your Step 2 but feel free to do them early if you want altho they emphasize diff principles than what will be on your CCE exam so only do it if you are "studying" for step 2 in advance. Exam master should be fine, as the questions on it are equally as retarded as most of the questions on your CCE exam, seriously for that test its probably your best prep. Also you have a 20 point curve, so unless you are borderline failing your rotation to begin with and cannot score a 55% on this exam .....you'll be fine. Summary, one of the medicine books + exam master + fine german imported beer.

    :)

thanks for the advice saad. I forgot to add german beer to scut sheet list I thought the psych shelf had off the wall questions that I think even the NBME would laugh at, and I'm sad to hear that UW won't prepare me for the saba medicine shelf. Exam Master, here I come! and I'll cw with Step Up to Medicine. btw, how is the step study going for you?yes yes, here at sinai-grace in Detroit Michigan the students are also on Q4 call with the two interns and residents. I have talked to other Saba students at our other sites (LA, KC, ect) and none of them have such a rigorious schedule! is Q4 normal for most medicine rotations?

I'm doing my medicine rotation right now and I am also Q4. I set it up myself in Ohio. The sleep thing definately sucks but I am also getting alot of exposure and hands on learning. Hopefully it pays off in the end. When do you finish your rotation and when are you taking the exam? Also, as for the patient logs that we have to fill out on the Saba website, how many patients do we need to turn in for each rotation?

i highly disagree. Q4 student call is useless...all you are doing is slaving and doing scut work and not learning. This is the same issue people have with doing a prelim surg/medicine/transitional year before competitive specialties like Anes/Derm/Optho/Rads, etc. If you are motivated to learn, you will learn regardless of how late and sleep deprived they leave you, arguably even more so. Not only that but med school is your last chance of some free time to enjoy before Intern year and rest of residency, Q4 call is more than some interns and only slightly better than Q3 call enjoyed by Surgery Residents, absurd!! I had zero call during IM and minimal call during my rotations except surg and now that i am studying for step 2 i dont see any lack of knowledge that i might or might not have. Plus i am in good shape and good spirits from having time to work out and go out partying in between working hard and studying on a regular basis for the last year.

I have to say the Q4 schedule has left little time to study bc my days off are spent sleeping! I am learning, but have to agree with saad a bit bc there is a lot of scut when you are Q4 bc team just wants to go home and rest just as badly as the students do! my team will teach when asked questions but often i'm too tired to even think of anything!

i'm hoping my OBGYN rotation will be a little more chill. and as for surgery, I hear the Kansas VA isn't too bad...as for medicine, hey it's been a good experience, and I don't regret getting a hospital with Q4 call. I just hope it doesn't screw me over for the shelf 'cos I haven't studied like I should.

as for the shelf...probably take it in the few days between when medicine ends and OBGYN starts, which is three days. If I feel really pressed and stressed, I might take it during my first week of OBGYN, but that will be a last resort.

Peds can be Q3 also. But I loved it as a student.
By contrast, I'd shoot myself if I had to do medicine Q4 for more than a couple of months....

The KCVA surgery rotation is a good rotation for students, I got a great letter out of it. Also opportunity to participate in some organ harvesting, really cool. Call is not bad, as much hands on as you want, especially if you like to do I&D's. Highly recommended.
