for those of you who are from toronto area, the only two good option sto get to sxm are:
1)AA: YYZ, MIA, SXM...roundtrip is around 800 bux, taxes included.. 2)Us Airways: YYZ, CLT, SXM...same, around 800 bux... i got tired of that coz the customs at miami is ridiculous, and many of my friends have missed flights when they are going back home from sxm...ive gone through there twice, and both times i came close to missing my flight from mia to yyz...thank god i booked the front most seats on the plane, so i got up and ran to the customs. this time i booked a roundtrip from sxm to bufallo for 423 cdn...common sense has finally kicked in...just 3 semesters late, i guess. the sxm flight to buffalo flight is from U.S. airways, and goes through charlotte...and you arrive in buffalo the same night...there is no stop over...thats the big issue...try not to do an overnight stay at any airport...esp. if you are taking the ferry (dawn 2)...you will need 2/3 days after your travel just to recover, if yu are doing this for the first time especially. those of you who live close to niagra falls and hamilton...look into taking a flight from buffalo...its even closer for you than to come to pearson airport...and its worth saving $400... i live 20 mins away from pearson airport, but i have booked a flight to buffalo... try continental flight 860 from EWR (newjersey) to SXM...thats what my friend takes...if you dont live that far from new jersey, def. look into that...its a direct flight to sxm, and gets you here in time so you can reach saba the same day, either b boat or winair i.e. dont have to book a hotel at st martin for one night...roundtrip is 500 bux, taxes incl...and continental also gives you food i would suggest you take dawn-2 ferry if you want your luggage to be with you at all times after getting to sxm. winair is VERY unreliable. hey everyone... after watching some of the youtube videos of the landing on SABA... im thinking of taking a ferry to the island from St. Maarten.
I was wondering if anyone knows if an hour and a half would be enough time for someone to get their stuff (bags etc) from the airport at Phillipsburg, and get to DAWN II at Dock Maarten for one of their ferry departures. -Or- am i totally going about it the wrong way, and should i look going on The EDGE to get to SABA (in which case i wouldnt have any time restrictions) Also, if anyone thinks that going by winair is the best option, please let me know! any input will be greatly appreciated |

Travelling to Saba
Ok all, here's the scoop.
If you get sea-sick, do NOT take the ferry. I suggest Winair, they have small planes, but they'll get you to the island in 7 minutes from St. Maarten. And they'll check your bags too. You may have to take another trip down to the airport to pick up your luggage, sometimes the planes are just too full, but it's not a problem. Most likely your luggage will arrive at the same time you do. For those who don't know, Winair is a small airline that island hops. You can only get to Saba on Winair from St. Maarten. And if you want to leave the island, you have to take Winair back to St. Maaren. They might be doing flights from Saba to St Eustatius, but that won't help you. St. Maarten is your portal to the other islands and back to the US. Hopefully you aren't taking much to the island except your necessities. I made the mistake of shipping a few boxes of things I just couldn't live without. Let me tell you, you can live without them...students are buying and selling things all the time at the school and apartments are furnished and will include dishes silverware, etc. You'll need your laptop for school, most of the lectures are on Powerpoint. And you'll want your camera of course. But don't bring other electronics that are too valuable (DVD players, more computers, video cameras, etc.) The humidity has been known to damage your electronics. Don't be surprised if you have to replace your laptops during your time on the island. I was lucky, but many others went through 2 laptops. AND BRING A SURGE PROTECTOR! The electricity is messed up and surges are common, especially during the storms. Good luck! |
