Hows the mosquito situation in Saba

Hows the mosquito/bug situation in Saba? Should I be concerned? Do people use nets? Should i bring bug repellent? I hear paranoid is a new trend.

Btw, there was a thread on this b4 but it dates back 5 years

Hi there,

While there are mozzies here in small numbers from time to time, it depends largely on exactly where you live. If there is any standing water near your house / apartment, an old tire in the bushes for instance, then you may have a small problem with them. However, they are very nearly nonexistent in most areas on the island throughout the year.

I've lived in 6 different locations on Saba in the 2+ years that I've been here, and only one of those places ever had the odd mozzie from time to time. I had a simple bed net and that was that. As for the rest of the places I've been in here, I simply haven't had any.

As for other types of bugs, there really isn't anything else that bites as long as you aren't out in the jungle turning over rocks.

Considering the time I've been here and my having moved around a lot, I'd give the island a 1 out of 10 on the subject of Mosquito Problems. Someone else who has lived in one place and has been unlucky may tell you that the whole island is infested because their house is. So it goes.

I'd put it at the bottom of your list of worries. Bringing an inexpensive bed net is cheap insurance though. I still have mine 'just in case'.

Good point regarding time of day.

Even if there are some around, you can still leave doors and windows open until mid-afternoon as they won't usually show up until things start to cool down a bit.

I'm here on the island over break and now that the negative students are gone there really isn't anything left to suck the life out of you here. It's too bad the school doesn't screen the student body more before admitting them and just accept the ones that are thankful for the opportunity that this island gives them. I guess there has to be one in every crowd.

Agreed

No life sucking bugs or.... other little annoying pests. It should be like this all year long. They must keep all the life sucking things in a cage over break and just let them out when the semester starts!

Seriously though.... no mosquitos or really anything worse than ants that I have had to deal with..... Once you get off campus roaches and rats can be a problem, so just look for a clean, well kept place when you are searching!
