Question on Verizon cell phones on Saba

Next semester I will be start med school at Saba. When I am down there I want to be able to use my cell phone. Currently I have Verizon wireless, and I am able to get a discount phone right now on my plan. Does anyone recommend using one of Verizon’s global phones on Saba? And how will do the Verizon global phones work on Saba? I am thinking of getting the Motorola Z6c.

I had the same question, and I dont think the cell phone works at all. i think the Island has its own cell phone company from what I heard and you can get their cell phone, but I guess most people just use PC-Connect or just home phone lines. But if anyone has a definit answer that would be great. because I have verizon as well and would like to be able to bring my cell phone on the island for occasional phone calls when taking a break from the long hours in the library!!!

Your cell phone will not work. There are no towers on Saba, except for maybe their own. I would suggest getting a home phone and/or internet. We used to use Skype to call through the internet, all you need is the program and a USB headset to plug into your computer. It's not always the clearest, but it's very cheap per minute.

Verizon CDMA works in Sint Maarten. It costs about $2.00 per minute to make or receive calls.

The Verizon worldphones will NOT work in Saba. Verizon puts in their own SIM cards into their own LOCKED phones. If you put a non-Verizon SIM card in the phone it will not work. Verizon does NOT have an agreement with either UTS or Telcell.

If you want to have a cool phone, buy an UNLOCKED - QUAD BAND phone from one of the places online and bring it with you. When you get here, make your choice between UTS (Chippie) and Telcell and purchase one of their pre-paid SIM cards. When you run out of money, you either buy a scratch-off card or go to one of the places on the island that uses a machine to top-up your phone.

It's wierd, but it is cheaper to call the US $0.33/minute than it is to call Saba $.40/minute on a Telcell phone.

Hoping to have informed you sufficiently. (Once you get to Saba, you will understand that last sentence...)
