General Q&A

Please discuss general clinical clerkship topics in this thread (i.e. those not related to a specific site or clinical experience).

Regards,

How much travelling is there for clinicals?

I was just wondering if it is possible to do most of your clinicals in one place? I am hoping to start in Jan (interview on Thursday) and will be going to the island without my wife who will be finishing her PhD. My hope is that after the 5 semesters on the island, which will finish at around the same time as her PhD, and I can do my clinical rotations in the same city that she gets a Post Doc position so we can be together again. Is this realistic? I will probably be doing at least on rotation in Canada and if I have to move a bit, that should be okay, but is it possible to do the majority at one site.... or at least in one city? Thanks.

I am curious to know the same!

From the tad bit of research and here-say from people on the forum, it seems there is one hospital (forget the name) in NY where you can do all but psych (??). But that could definitely change by the time your rotations come around.

Clinical question

Hi, I am very interested in Saba and what it has to offer. The only concern I have right now is clinicals.

In regards to greenbook, would it be relatively easy for a young man like me who doesn’t have any real concern with staying in a particular state, getting all cores green as well as most if not all electives green. This, all being done within the 2 years of clinicals, prior to residency match.

I would like to hear from those planning, already doing, or has finished clinicals.

Also, do some of you students have long gaps between clinicals (I guess this is the same as asking if some students had to go past 2 years to complete their clinicals)

When can I do Family Practice?

What are the restrictions on when Saba students can do the Family Practice
rotation? Must you finish any other rotation first? Or could you
potentially do it as your first or second rotation after Psych? Do you have to complete Internal Medicine first? I have to split up my Internal Medicine and am wondering if I can do my Family Practice after completing all my cores except the final 6 weeks of Internal Medicine. My wife wants to possibly do Family Practice after completing her first rotation, Psych. Anyone have any answers? I understand some Canadien students did FP very early on in core rotations....

FYI, there are no restrictions on doing FP--it can be done at any time.

How long is each elective rotation?

The website says 30 weeks of electives have to be completed...how many weeks do students generally spend in each elective area? Is there a min/max amount of time that you can spend in each area? Do people usually do more than 30, since that is the "minimum" requirement?

Thanks

While we're at it, what exactly does 'green book' mean?

It's an ACGME approved residency. In other words, a real residency at a real training location, not your hooking up with 'Uncle Joe' for a couple of years and claiming it's residency training.

Get yourself a copy of "Isersons Getting Into a Residency" by Iserson. It'll be the most valuable $35 you'll spend on your medical education.
