Is St. Lukes part of University of Mossouri Kansas Medical Centre. Because when you go to freida it doesn't say St. Lukes and that's worrying me a bit.

Yes. On FREIDA you can do an institution search with the ID number 28-0337 and you'll see St. Luke's.

St. Lukes is a private hospital, not part of the UMKC campus. This may give them more latitude in how they run their program.
St. Luke's primarily has an affiliation with UMKC as a center for graduate medical education, and as such is accredited by the ACGME. They graciously allow Saba students to participate in their established program.

I'm starting my first clerkship in IM at St. Luke's in a few weeks and have some questions for those of you who have been there. Feel free to email me as well at talktolisa@gmail.com with any helpful tidbits!

1). Dress code? Do you need scrubs? Where did you get your comfy shoes from?

2). Does the hospital provide us with a pager?

3). What do you carry in your pockets? Any can't-do-without items?

4). Do you bring lunch or a bag, etc? If so, is there a safe place to stash it, or does it seem like it gets in everyone's way?

5). Is it true that we have to write down every patient we see in a "patient log"? What is the best way to manage this?

6). My clinical rotation confirmation sheet says this: "All H&Ps must be turned in on time or your rotation may result in failure." Just what are they referring to here? Are there assignments we need to turn into the school or what?

7). How often can I expect to be on call? How often can I expect to work weekends? Is it true that IM is 6 days a week?

Not for Internal Medicine. You may wear scrubs if you want on overnight call, though. You can always get some from the surgery locker room on A-level if you don't have any - any resident or staff can let you in.

Yes.

St. Luke's will give you a Maxwell's quick reference handbook that shows how to write orders, has electrolyte info, and so on in it, it is very helpful. If you can afford it get a PDA and download the free version of epocrates to run on it. It is the gold standard of drug references. If you don't have a PDA then get the pocket book edition of Tarascon Pharmocopeia for $15. Helpful tip: know all about Hyponatremia and SIADH prior to starting, these are bread and butter IM topics you WILL be pimped on. Tell em I said hi.

You don't get a locker. You don't get a place to sleep if they make you do overnight call. There are couches in the resident lounge area. You can leave a bag in the resident lounge; as long as you don't leave expensive stuff in it (and probably even if you did) it'll be safe. There are mandatory lectures during lunch you have to attend (this means no free time during the day). There is a refrigerator up in the residents lounge if you bring a lunch. We got free lunch every day which was marginal deli sandwiches or hospital pizza or on occassion salad.
5). Is it true that we have to write down every patient we see in a "patient log"? What is the best way to manage this?
I never did this, but it's a good idea. It's not required at St. Luke's. At the end of each core you are suppossed to submit on the school website a list of anonymous patients you saw. You will remember plenty to report on the website form. Carry a small moleskin notebook (Target and most bookstores have them) to write down the nuggets of info you get (like how to manage shock, etc.)

Doesn't apply to St. Luke's. You will do lots of H&Ps but they go in the chart and your residents and attending will see them almost immediately anyway. I think this statement just means always be on time, always be efficient, and always do any research or assignments given to you promptly - you'll only be given one or two per rotation. As a general rule, never ask a resident or attending a question that you can look up in a book or online (unless it's a really easy going resident that likes to teach).
7). How often can I expect to be on call? How often can I expect to work weekends? Is it true that IM is 6 days a week?
Typically you will show up by at least 7am to pre-round on your patients. You will be expected to follow 2 to 4 patients and be able to concisely present them on rounds, during which you will be pimped. No one may tell you how many patients to follow; I was following 6 at first - don't kill yourself like this.
You do like 2 long overnight calls and 2 short (work to 8 or 10pm) calls per month. Nice residents know there is no where for you to sleep on overnight calls (unless things have changed in the last few months) and so they send you home early if it's not busy. Tip: Request to start on the slower orange service, you get more one on one instruction from staff and it's not as fast-paced and academically stringent (less pimping) than the purple service. ESPECIALLY if this is your first rotation. IM is six days a week not counting call. Your relationship with your residents mostly determines your hours (true on most rotations). Welcome to the hardest year of med school.
