At first I had planned on going to Russia too, and I am glad that I didn't. From what I have read and researched, Russia should be on the bottom of the list, though it does have cheap tuition, easy admission (I have never heard of anyone not getting into a school if you have the money), and the interesting culture and language.
I haven't heard of anyone going to Russia and returning successfully to practice in the United States. I have seen some which succeeded in being professors or researchers, etc.
Also, the clinicals are held in Russian (like MMA and MSU which have 3 years English, 3 years Russian), and Russian, from what I've heard, is not an easy language to pick up.
Why not consider some schools with a proven track record of returning students for practice in the United States.
Unless you plan on staying in Russia, or perhaps going to India...

Hey there, thanks for the response.
I suppose you are right about russia. Can you recommend me any good med schools which are not too expensive or where a loan is easily obtainable?
I am staying in southafrica and applied here but rejected as my marks were not good?
Please help
Thanks
I personally would recommend looking at some of the more established Caribbean schools. Have you taken the MCATs? The "Big 3" require those, and their admissions standards have become pretty high. By the "Big 3" I mean St. George's, Ross, and AUC. There are also others, like Saba, St. Matthew's, and MUA Nevis. I've also heard good things about St. Eustatius and UNIBE, in the Dominican Republic.
Search around the different foreign med school forums on this site, and it will gain you at least some of the insights of foreign med school "shopping." Best of luck to you!

I am currently studying in RSMU
you say that you are from SOuth Africa...Over here there are many other Africans and quite a number of South Africans as well.
To me, there is no Best med school in Russia.
What you can probably say is that there are the a couple of better ones, compared to the rest.
Moscow Medical Academy is one of the highest rated ones, and the foreign student's department is very well on par with the Russian department.
Russian State Medical University about 3 levels below MMA but it has significantly improved over the few years, due to the influx of foreign students(influx of $$$). They have renovated almost every department in the university and bought better English books. We are very excited on what other improvements the University will be doing.
People Friendship University is a very diverse and very college-y university. If my stats are correct, 80% of the students are foreign students, so you will get alot of culture stuffs there. In terms of the education standard, I doubt that the Russian government will spend a whole lot on developing a foreigner majority education system.
It is not the best university for sure,
Nishy Novgorad M.U. has the reputation of being the best English Language department in Russia.
They started the department over 10years ago and has significantly improved (foreigners=money) in the last 10 years. But the overall quality of the university is certainly not one of the best-compared with MMA.
Volgagrad State M.U. is a very well balanced medical school, they focus alot of the participation and hands on training of the students and application of Russian language, they might not have the best teachers but they certainly have one of the better systems.
Pfu has less than 40% foreign students.
It is the only place in moscow where one can have a semblant of a college campus life..
everything is nearby, the anatomy, pathology, surgical anatomy lab are at a walking distance and you can practice suturing.. your gross anatomy and histo/path slides whenever you may need it..that s a big big plus!
allow me to scoff at your comments about MMA and RSMU... both owned and run by the corrupt agent SAMAN.
MMA is light years away from being up to par to its Russian students counterparts.. that is only found in fantasy land.. if anyone at MMA would dispute this fact, I would invite you to pay a visit to Professor Tezikoff.. at the pathophysiology department and ask him.. He will laugh at your face and may tap you on your shoulder and say 'you are a good student though'..
RSMU is the target of every students!! Russians and foreign.. for the simple reason that it is easy.. no need to study..
the staff is probably the most corrupt in moscow's med schools.
good place if you want to party all the time and eventually be called 'doctor'.
PFU.. is best by far..
-Russian students avoid it.. as they know that their chances to make it to 3 rd year are 50/50.
-Remember that you will be a FOREIGNER in Russia... and whether you like it or not.. IF you are somewhat a colored-skin person, you ll end up having a harder time.. and staff wont like you much for that.. sad but true..
PFU welcomes foreign students and they feel at home.. during your practical years in the clinics.. profs will be helpful..and not ignore you like at MMA..
my question is the following: would one rather go to MMA and help elder patients get dressed and take them to the toilet or be at PFU and actually operate, see patients?
These are the instances of 2 common acquaintances of mine in Surgery.. but one has the unfortune to be at MMA and the other PFU...
now you chose..
I may sound partial.. for the simple reason that I was at MMA and PFU...
RSMU is right behind PFU and looks like some ghetto in chicago.. that is why they dont show you the actual pictures in their website..
I wanted to comment on the ' established' carribbean med schools which i found to be hilarious.
The carribean med schools were solely set up for failing american students that desired to practice medicine in the US.Or students that could not get into med schools in the US. This is the plain fact.
There is no famed carribean med schools, and if they were, they would be famed within carribbean med students only.
The rate of failure is really high in those schools and until recently the teaching staff was heavily RUSSIA-educated staff.
Some of those schools have tuition even higher than actual medical schools in America!
That is understandable as these are not schools but money-making institutions.
They pretend that SGU is the best among them. I have a met a few graduates from SGU and was glad to say that I was a Russia-made doctor.
Russian or European medical schools were not made for its students to take the USMLE and therefore have a different educational system.
European, Russian med schools have a history and tradition of medicine and do no date since the 1990s like most carribean med schools.
If anyone wants further info about those fake med schools in the carribean schools, i invite them to look in the carribean med schools forum and you ll see that they are not having it any better especially for the price that they pay.
