Any student starting in May 2003 have anxiety like me!

Guys i dont know if its normal but i have extrene anxiety, from everything, like busting alllllllllllllll this money to going to a non US school, to not sure if i made the right decision of picking Ross over SGU , to the uncertainty the future of Ross brings, to all the little things about Ross we dont know about yet. I also have anxiety whether I rushed into a caribbean school, sometimes i feel like i am US med school material (please dont go off on me, i am not trying to be rude or cocky, just expressing myself). I dont know, i hate the fact that i am going to have to say I graduated from a Caribbean Medical School thats so much for profit that it is listed on the stock exchange, it is kind of embarrassing. I am just scared of the whole process, anyone share similar feelings like this, and if so how do you deal with them and what made you get over them. Please help!!!

Hey, take it easy..
I should be saying the same thing to myself. Look I was talking with Doc about the samething. He told me to make sure I can atleast sleep 8 hours when I am in Dominica. It has been 2 weeks since I can't sleep right. Only sleep like 3 hours a day, now thats really bad. :-)
Even my back is really hurting from lack of sleep. I really hope you are not in the degree I am.
I am really thinking of taking sleeping pills.
well see you over Dominica soon. and dont worry is a really good choice Ross ok.

Re: Any student starting in May 2003 have anxiety like me!

hahahahahaah...... Sorry, not laughing at you, just remembering my anxiety level before I left for the rock 4 years ago..... Hate to tell you this, but the anxiety level doesn't go away until after you match 4 years from now (replace by another totally different anxiety), you just learn to deal with it.
I remember sitting on the deck of Seaside on about day #2 when someone came up to me and told me the school was being sold. hahahahaha..... Oh yeah, those were the days. The days when Ross rumors (which I assume continue), shoot the anxiety level through the roof and send people running home for valium.
I think it all boils down to this (other veterans correct me if I'm wrong):
If you are honest with yourself, and are willing to sacrafice all time and energy to become engrossed with your studies: Everything will work out in the end. Don't go to Ross with the attitude "I just want to pass," or things may not work out the way you want them to. If you go with the attitude "I am going down there to be one of the best damn students in my class", you will do well, you will come back to the US, do fine on your boards, and get your choice of residency. Remember, thousands of students have come before you.
It's all what you make of it. Anxiety is fine, you will just learn to tunnel that emotion into productive means.
If you have any doubts, look at the Ross residency match lists. The rule is that almost everyone gets a residency. Some don't, but it is not as common, and usually there exists other circumstances.
I was wait-listed at 6 US schools, 2 years in a row. Now I am getting ready to start and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at an Ivy league University based hospital coming from Ross -- Go figure.
After 1 semester you will be a veteran counseling the new 1st semesters about tailoring their anxiety.
Good luck.

Re: Any student starting in May 2003 have anxiety like me!

Thanks for the reassurance Keith and congrats on your success. I am just do stressed, seriously. A question for you Keith since you went thru the experience and started in May, what did you do with the time off, since if you start in May , you have like 9 months off before you match. Also Ross is kind of scaring me cause I hate how it keeps getting sold over and over again, and i hate how its listed on the stock market with DeVry, i mean it doesnt give a good impression when your medical school is so money focused it listed on Nasdaq, so i was wondering keith it seems like you had good undergrad grades since you waitlisted at 6 US med schools, why did you choose Ross over SGU, when SGU is more stable and better residencies, etc...
PS
i only asked because you seemed like an understanding objective person with honest opinions.

"A question for you Keith since you went thru the experience and started in May, what did you do with the time off, since if you start in May , you have like 9 months off before you match. "

Reality is, you won't have more than 3 months before you match. In my class, some people ended in November (rare), most ended in December-January, others are still doing clinicals and are finishing in April. Several options exist:
1) Research
2) Work and make money (I am still a Paramedic, so I can make money that way)
3) VACATION - you will want one after Ross and before residency
4) Spread out your clinicals with some time off for vacations so that you end in April

"Also Ross is kind of scaring me cause I hate how it keeps getting sold over and over again, and i hate how its listed on the stock market with DeVry, i mean it doesnt give a good impression when your medical school is so money focused it listed on Nasdaq"

Who cares once you graduate? Ross will have been sold now TWO times in my tenure there. Did it affect me or my classmates -- Not really. In fact the infusion of money into the school probably helped more than it hurt. Once you graduate, nobody cares where you came from or who owns the school. In fact, most US students I rotated with were more intrigued than condecending (especially after they rapidly find out our knowledge base and clinical prepartaion usually exceeds theirs). You want to be a physician -- so go be a physician.

"so i was wondering keith it seems like you had good undergrad grades since you waitlisted at 6 US med schools, why did you choose Ross over SGU, when SGU is more stable and better residencies, etc... "

2 reasons:
1) I knew somebody who went to Ross, who at the time was a 4th year student who really impressed me.
2) I didn't get an interview offer at SGU... Too bad for them huh?

Re: Any student starting in May 2003 have anxiety like me!

Hello,

When I came from the airport to Ross Univ., one upper class person told us to tell the driver to take us back to the airport because this place sucks. I knew that I was here for a reason and I will be the one to decide if this place sucks. When I heard this, I was scared as hell and I was nervous until the 1st mini of 1st semester. Once I did well on that exam, I was determined that the faculty is not here to fail you. The only way you can fail is if you don't work hard and sit at Coconut Beach sipping Pina Coladas and drinking Soca Rum. After 4 years at Ross, I am happy that I went there.

Before I chose Ross Univ., I was waiting to get into Univ. of Utah med school. They told me their class in Fall of 1998 had filled up and the dean gave me an option in sticking around to be considered as a 'strong candidate' in the next class. I told the dean I need to move on and that is when I decided to come to Ross Univ. after I spoke with my pre-clinical advisor. I will tell you that this is the next best thing to US medical schools.

I agree with Keith that you come to Ross only if you have the heart to become a physician. You must be hard working and dedicated if you want to succeed not only on "The Rock" but in 3rd and 4th year.

I was a member of the May 1999 Class. I finished my clinicals in December and for the last 5 months I have been on vacation. I start my internal med. residency in July in Chicago.

Remember, work hard and you will do the best if you have the heart and mind to succeed.

Best of Luck,
Naq Dog

I will fill right at home I just hope they are good.
But since the birth of PiñaColada is right here, maybe they are not so good. but fair.
