Clinical Equipment Kit?

what all does this include? is it really neccessary?

will having the oto/opthalmascope be required as well?

As for books : I am planning on getting the
Gartner : Color Textbook of hisotolgy (already have)
Wheather's Functional Histology
Moore : developing human
Meisenberg : biochem
Jorde : genetics
Bickkey : guide to physical exam and history taking
A pocket manual of differential diagnosis
stedman's medical dictionary
pre-test genetics
brs : cell bio and histology

Also, I am getting the microscrope from BIG (islandthrift had no more to sell me). The printer, and I already have the stethescope. I plan on getting the BRS or High Yield review books up here and brinigng those down.

Am I missing anything? Can I cut somethign out?

Re: Clinical Equipment Kit?

I would recommend that you not get the following books as they won't be used:

1) Bickkey : guide to physical exam and history taking
2) A pocket manual of differential diagnosis
3) Stedman's medical dictionary

The guide to physical exam is used in the 4th semester but not before then. There may be a new edition by the time you get to 4th semester.

You also will not use the clinical equipment kit until 4th semester.

Re: Clinical Equipment Kit?

hey mitch if we dont need the clinical kit until 4th semester it would be okay to hold off on buying until then, or it would be a good idea to go ahead and get it now? anything else from that list that is really useful that we need or do not need? thanks.

yeah, i would think that 1st termers need as much room in their luggage as possible. why bring things you wont need until a year later? just buy it from BIG next year...as newer and better equipment/books may be released over the upcoming year.

Re: Clinical Equipment Kit?

Yeah, hold off until you need it. If you are like most students, you'll be back home every four months and can bring a ton of stuff with you later.

MitchDC

P.S. What they may list as student recommended is a mystery. They have never asked me (or anybody I know) to recommend books to them. Compare the list that BIG published with the list the school publishes on the Current News section of the website.

(I hate when the PS is longer than the message...oh well.

Re: Clinical Equipment Kit?

Bevo,
Dump the Moore's "The Developing Human"- it explains things very well- but takes 3 times as long to go through it compared to Langmann's "Medical Embryology". I believe myself and 10 of my friends haven't picked up Moore & Persaud since the 2nd week of school. Langmann's is the way to go- just my opinion on that one.

As for Histology- JUNQUIERA!- I can't stress that enough cause Wheater's (although helpful) is not going to be what Kallie (the Histology/Embryology/Microanatomy/Development professor) utilizes on a daily basis.
Leave the Bickley and the pocket manual of differential diagnosis at home.

I'm going to disagree w/ Mitch on the Stedman's Med Dict.- I found that those who had it had easy access to many useful things- especially when battling case-base learning discussions- your facilitator might ask you a simple question and you won't know it-- easily resolved if you have Stedman's handy; also handy at home-- very good for quick reference.
Also, don't overpack your stuff w/ supplies- give it an even mix of clothes, supplies, crap you like (ex. DVDs for your notebook for downtime, special kind of anything you want, etc.), and anything else you can squeeze into 2 suitcases - highly recommend for both of them to be under 60 lbs
