What do you normally wear to class each day? Are shorts fine? I was just wondering what type of clothing I should bring when I come down in January. Also, where do you do your laundry?
Thanks for any responses.

511 points Yes, shorts and comfortable clothes are ideal. Its usually warm here, but nice and cool (sometimes freezing!) in the classrooms.

some people find the classrooms uncomfortably cold. some wore coats to class. i was happy in a T shirt, but then , i am from chicago originally.
Having my own extra layer of natural insulation, I love the temperature in classroom 1 and 5. But I know that I am an extreme case, since I see the rest of my classmates put on sweaters. I dread the day the students take some kind of group decision to turn up the thermostat because I will be the lone voice of opposition.
Classroom 6 has a problem. It's so warm in there I keep falling asleep, though it was actually almost ok today, probably because the new dean visited. We'll see if the AC stays "fixed" tomorrow. Then again, the other students were putting on sweaters even in there so again it could be just me.
Unless you are a slave to fasion, bring down clothes you won't mind getting ruined and are prepared to leave behind once you're finished with this island. It will save you from fretting about how the laundries seem to add stains instead of taking them away.
And bring extra sandals. Mine barely lasted first semester so I've been subsisting on ones bought in Portsmouth.

Like they said. Classrooms and the library are cold. Outside - HOTTER than summer in hell. So, bring a nice light woolen or synthetic fiber sweater. For your legs, keep track pants, or light woolen pajama-like bottoms in your locker for easy access when you get cold.
For 3rd and 4th semeser (when people need to dress up for Behavioral and ICM) - wear tennis shoes, running shoes or sandals when walking TO and FROM your apartments. It is pointless to wear uncomfortable patent leather shoes or high heels on dirtroads between school and home.
Also, wear a shirt you can sweat in and just change into your nice dress shirts and tie once you get to class. Remember, we are dressing for our "practice patients", not for the banana peddlers and muggers we meet along the way.
The white coats can also WAIT til you get to the comfort of the AC in the classrooms. It baffles me why some people wear white coats while WALKING 2-3 kms under the SEARING tropical sun!
In short, a little bit of common sense will go a long way.
Pants and shorts with big friggin pockets are quiet handy.
This break, I'm comming back with a few more pairs.
