Hi,
I did as well. I wonder if you would need all those "required" texts. For those at Ross, did you buy all the required texts that they have listed? if so, would you recommend buying them from BIG used from students? Do u also need a lab coat and sthesecope? |

books
Every student is different; some students greatly benefit from having lots of books to study from/reference, while others learn by using only the handouts and just a few books. You will have to figure out what works best for you. The professors pick books based on how good they believe the books to be, as well as how well they will supplement their lectures. You will be assigned readings from many of the required books, and you may find that the recommended books supplement what you are learning in lecture. For instance, many of the histology slides used in lecture come directly out of the recommended book Basic Histology by Junqueira.
The bookstore does not always stock 1st semester books, so if you want to make sure you have books for the first week of class, you may want to order ahead of time. However, you can save a lot of money by waiting until you get here and buying from upperclassmen, though there is no guarantee you will find what you are looking for. Another option is purchasing your books through Island Thrift. Island Thrift is operated by the spouse of a current student, and has many first semester books in stock. They buy their books from students leaving the island and then sell them to incoming students. I bought a lot of books from Island Thrift when I arrived, and saved a ton of money. I think you can also order books ahead of time. The website is www.islandthrift.com. I am currently a 2nd semester student and am part of the first class to go through the new integrated curriculum. Unless they change things, we did not have much neuroscience until second semester, so you might be able to wait to get those books until later. As for clinical equipment, you will probably not need anything until 3rd semester, although you will need a coat for the white coat ceremony. I hope this helps! |
