No more BMSI? Mandatory comp? Rumor or fact?

They had a meeting and didn't tell us about it?

So did anyone attend this meeting?

I heard there is no more BMSI, everyone goes to Miami, but everyone must take the comp, and you have 3 chances to pass the comp in order to take Step 1.

Oh yeah, joke of the day was that some kid with a C-average gpa at Ross got the highest USMLE score this semester. Deja Vu?

So WTH?

I personally know the 'kid' with the highest step 1 scores this semester and he was a 4.0 student.

comp

if that is the case, then they are reverting to exactly the way it was when the miami semester first came to be. you took the comp on the rock, if you failed it, you had a chance to take it in miami at the start of the semester, and if ist 2 strikes, then you got to take it at the end of teh miami semester again. 3 strikes and you got remediated. personally, i passed first try, and never took it again, but if you wanted to you could, just as practice working your way up to step 1. wish i had done that in hindsight, maybe i could have eked out a few more points on the exam.

i was there link626. its all true.

hey K-Dogg... i experienced the meeting first hand. here is my account of the meeting as documented on evilmcnasty.blogspot.com :

i attended an interesting meeting today.

[straight from the dean's mouth]
effective september 2005 for all semesters:

no more bmsi.

everyone must take the comp exam.
- must pass with a raw 64. [set standard by NBME]
- if you do pass you move on to the miami campus.
>you are considered certified to take usmle step 1.
- if you dont pass you still get to move on to miami.
> you are not not certified for step 1.

for those not passing the first time:
- you take a review course [like a new bmsi].
- i think its concurrent with aicm.
- then you take the comp again [pass with a 64].
- you get 3 chances to pass.
- if you fail 3 times you are dismissed.

regarding testing in MS2 - 4th semester:
- we take all 4 SHELF exams. [they are weighed more heavily now]
- we have to do icm oral exams.
- we still have the final mini 3.
- we all have to sit for the comp exam.
- all in all thats 7 exams we must sit for.

this is gonna be fun time kids. forget about going to class, sleeping, eating, or going to the bathroom. you gotta study for these tests. enjoy.

sounds alot like residency (minus the tests, but multiplying the studying by 100)....get used to it now, before reality hits you in a few years.

Good luck to all,

Full Circle

Someone correct if I am wrong here, but the current scenario you describe sounds an awful lot like the way it used to be down there. Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away, Rossies were made to take shelf exams for all subjects every semester and everyone was also required to take the comp regardless of GPA. Everything seems to go in cycles with Ross. Who knows maybe now we will get some of the clinicals sites we used to have back?

Yes, it sounds familiar. It seems that the BMSI isn't working so they are reverting to the old approach and switching to a with a new type of BMSI???. If I remember correctly they started the BMSI in September 2002, so it's been on trial for the past 3 years.

12 weeks

I guess now they have the proper ammunition to justify increasing 5th semester from 9 weeks to 12 weeks. In addition they must beleive that being able to enjoy the good old USA will help the students in passing the comp exam. Good food = good grades. Just make sure you study and not spend too much time on the beach.

Good luck to all students.
