The Realization

Congrats to Dr. A. She will probably be one of the most super docs. What JPFL81 may be failing to realize is that she has just faced the gravity of realizing that her dream has finally come true, and all of her hard work has payed off. It's like the first time your baby utters "da-da", and you realize "OMG, I'm a dad". Or the first time you look at your wedding band or someone calls you "Mrs." and you realize "geeze, I really AM married". Or the time you're running your first code, and the patient makes it and thanks you the next day. I don't think money is a huge issue when you decide what journey to take in life (although having something to jingle in your pocket always helps). It's all about realizing and seeing your passion become a reality.

Dr. A...you go, girl.

Dru, very eloquently put.

Dr. A, you're gonna make a great doc. You're definitely an inspiration to us newbies just starting down this road.

I was away this weekend, enjoying my last weekend off in Toronto. Just returned....

I had to comment on this post by "islandFEVER"......FYI... I'm a female fighting off the male species and enjoying every minute of it.... (proved true this weekend!!!!)

Waiting for the paycheck....yes....wish to buy stuff with my own money instead of it being borrowed or from my dear parents......I've never worked a day in my life...so this truly will be cherished.....

Gator, glad to hear your 30hr call was as expected.....I'm kinda nervous for tuesday morn, when they throw us Pgy-1's under the microscope for the Unknown Slide Conference and expect us to know what we're looking at....(...nail biting....)

For all you reading this....I'm going into pathology. Gator98MD is going thru the real "doctor" training stuff (Internal Medicine)...30 hr calls, notes, codes etc....and I know he'll continue report on how that is.... For me, Robbins will officially be re-opened on the 4th of July holiday....

One thing I found interesting....my colleagues starting with me in my program both got 97 on Step 1....now I'm scared.....

Thank you all for your kind posts once again.......

(btw, Dru, can I take off the "2b" from my name or would I have to start a ne account?..Edit: thanks for the haste reply)

cool/scarier

There is nothing cooler than the first time you get to tell people you are a doc. There is nothing scarier than when a patient is crashing and they call the doc (you). Congrats. G

some thoughts

You know what I find interesting is that after all the hard work that I still dont "feel" like a physician. I attribute this to the stages of life. As we grow and learn we go from little fishes in a big pond to big fishes in a little pond. Such is the progression thru medical school. Well, I am here to tell you that once again in my life I feel like a very tiny fish in a very big pond. The amount of data that is being thrown my way right now is incalculable. I am hoping that my learning curve will be steep. I just finished another 30 hour call in which I got zero sleep and had to function the next day. Its about training your body to function under adverse conditions and still have your decision making intact. I am having fun though, I love my program and my upper levels are incredibly supportive. each day its gets a little easier. It has too because by second year you are managing the interns. I just hope I am as prepared as my upper levels when I get there. Anyway, forgive my sleep deprived ramble. I only say this to give encouragement to you guys out there trudging thru our school wondering if it will ever pay off. I wondered the same thing 4 years ago and now hear I am PGY-1 baby!!! Good Luck.

Well put Gator....I'm finally back online....missed alot here on vmd....I totally agree with you with feeling like a little fish in a large fish tank....

Thank goodness no calls for me (at least not in the first two months)....no such thing as 30 hr calls in pathology either... YEAH!!!!!!

It's definitely getting easier....day by day...can't believe how stupid I felt the first week of internship.....i couldn't even recognize nervous tissue!!!!....and today I recognized splenic tissue that was silver stained and was a nice homogenous light green stain...WOW!

An amazing thing happened to me the other day.....I got to call the OR and report a pathological diagnosis to the surgeon!!!!! Can you believe that? Me...who was a medical student a few months ago...got to speak to the surgeon and refer to myself as Dr. A....wow!...Unbelievable feeling!!!!

We've been told the learning curve is the steepest in first year and will be able to diagnose 90% of cases by 3rd year...wow......

Hold on tight everyone.....it'll be over pretty soon.....bright days ahead...
