a serious problem that the school can never solve.

That is the location problem. That directly affects the ability to attract and retain qualified teachers. There are many other Caribbean schools that have better living conditions.

Money is the only motivation. So for those good teachers, they are wanted everywhere. Therefore, it is an eternal problem for Ross. That is one of the reasons why students are not satisfied with the teachers. Good teachers are all taken. Only those who have no choice come down to Dominica to live in a 3rd world country.

Re: a serious problem that the school can never solve.

Dahai, your comments are incorrect. Because of the quality of the University, the financial compensation as compared to other schools, and the fact that Dominica does not charge Ross professors income tax the quality professors actually seek Ross out. If you are suggesting that the schools on the nicest island have the best professors you are far from the truth.

In fact, a bit of research will reveal that some of the school on the really nice islands have very few professors that are even from the United States. Many Ross professors come directly from US schools with significant experience.

While your statements are factually untrue, they do make sense. It makes sense that the nicest island will attract the best professors. However, keep in mind that professors are dumb. They too want to work at a respectable and stable school. If a professor chooses a job at a school on a touristy island simply because of the island, s/he is as clueless as students who do the same thing.

professors

I think most of the professors that are really good are the ones that fly in to teach. I think they to send some of the permanet professors packing.

geeze

Ya, know...some people in this world would still blame <them, they, someone else> if they found brown streaks in the underwear. Geeze. You are the consumer of education. If it's such a serious problem, pick a different school....um, or have you all ready?

Response.

Salutations "everyone":

I would have to agree with Dru on this one. Simply put, if one is not satisfied with the quality of the professors, then attend a different school. As far as the quality of professors is concerned, I think there will always be good professors and there will always be bad professors. Every school will have a mixture of each. The bottom line is that in the end, you get out what you put in. Ciao.

........

good professors taken? by whom? other carib schools? hahah.
They're all in the U.S.
The leftovers, and a few who seek more money, come to the caribbean.

good professors + caribbean = oxymoron.

We've got our share of crap professors, with their PhD's degrees from U. Missouri, and Texas A&M, etc.

live with it.

review books and textbooks (time permitting) = best professors.

study hard!

I would disagree. While there are some bad professors, there are some very good professors as well. If you hear their stories people have varied, and often interesting reasons for being in the Caribbean. Saying all of the professors are bad is like saying all the grads are bad.

professors

Personally I think we have some great professors. However it is my EXPERIENCE that most of them are the ones that fly in and fly out. I could mention the names of the good permanet ones but I would hate to be burned at the stake.

Re: a serious problem that the school can never solve.

If those professors can get better offers, they will certainly leave Dominica. They are not that dedicated. For those few who have already retired, do they really care if Ross is the best or the worst, as long as they are getting paid, they are happy. Why would they live at Dominica if they can live at other islands that are fully developed.

For those who are staying, obviously they don't have any better choices.

And not all professors were educated from UK or US. It is not true.

teachers

No where in this post did is say that ALL teachers come from or are matriculated from the UK or the US.

Ross isn't for everyone. and there's no shame in that, but it sounds like this person is saying that all of the teachers there are crappy and the only reason they are there is because they couldn't find any place better to work. That's a slap in the face to all of the teachers at Ross.
