Could anybody tell me the difference between MBBS and MD?
If one has MBBS, is it equivalent to MD?

510 points Hello,
I thought i should ask couple of questions regarding the MBBS in Pakistan since there is so much talk of that. My friend and i trying to figure out how the education system works there. So bare with us cze i have alot of questions.
Is this process to get MBBS in PK correct?
1. I hear after 10th grade you are done with school. Around age 15 0r 16 right?
2. Then two years of intermediate studies, which would give FA degree? age 17-18?
2. Two more years studies for BA degree? which would put avg. person 20 yrs. old with 14 years of total studies correct?
3. Then for MBBS, 1 more year of studies correct? Or 1 more yr. of studies and 1 yrs. of internship?
Are these steps correct? If guessed right, the avg. person would have MBBS degree by age 21 correct?
Anyone who lives in PK or currently studying there please help. Thanks
We are in Dominica not Pakistan.........![]()

MBBS is awarded in England and Wales (and many former colonies) and MD (which the US adopted back in the day) is given in Scotland. I feel reasonably sure about this.
The education system is quite different in UK versus US, so all this will be different to translate. High school (senior school) done at 16, A levels done by 18 and med school thereafter lasting 5 years.....

wikipedia has a good rundown of the whole deal... google it, you'll find some answers, as for pakistan specifically, cant help you.
510 points It's technically the same degree. Just that MBBS, MB BChir, BM BCh, MB BCh is more detailed (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) of Latin origin and used mainly in countries where the influence of the British was prominent.
MD simply means Doctor of Medicine (Also from Latin) and is mostly used in the US I believe.
However, I am quite certain they are both the first degree that one gets after med school and study times are pretty much the same.
Now in answer to learning01's question, you have been slightly mislead. In Pakistan you take your Metriculation exam after tenth grade.
Then you choose premed or pre engineering or business etc for your HSSC degree for which you first attend 2-3years of your respective subjects.
Then you enter your MBBS course/degree which is a total of roughly 5 1/2 Years and then a year of training.
Then further qualification is at your discretion. Hope this helps
But even if you have a MBBS and you come to practice in US, you still will have to take all the three step exams, right ?

510 points for M.B.B.S in most countries, u have to get a really high score for a standard high school test. No repeat for that test which is taken at 10th grade. there usually is no 11th or 12th grade(that depends on countries). Then you do 7 years of schooling; the last 2 years are like residency. After that if you have good grades, you can do specialities usu. done in england or french, and then go back home or practice there. believe it or not, a lot of them do go back to their home countries.
