equipment, coats...

For the first semester, what exactly needs to be brought down, 256 & 512 tuning forks, BP kit, steth, SHORT white lab coat, Scrubs??(color??), reflex hammer, what else needs to be brought??? do we use all of this the first semester?

Also once you get to the island, is the microscope essential or can you get around that somehow? does it make sense to share a scope? are they widley available? also do people ever subsititue camcorders for microscopes since the slides are shown on the projectors (correct me if im wrong i don't want to send out wrong info)

short it

Yes get the SHORT coat. With the RUSM logo.

Some people have said you can get away with a long coat.
And some people have said you can cut ahead in line.
I hate people who cut in line.

Verdict is still out on the microscope because the lab exam isn't for another 3 weeks. I expect people to get stingy with their microscopes about 3 days before the exam.

Semester 1

Even if you can share in 1st semester, you really cannot in 3rd semester. So why not just get your scope early and actually learn Histo instead of learn to memorize pictures. Yes, you can use your camcorder, but again, you aren't really doing it then, just watching it. If you get to micro and can't use a scope, you'll be hurting.

Yes, bring a short coat. That is the correct thing to have. You can get a Ross patch in the bookstore for a few dollars.

Dean Wanger is the course director for the Doctor, Patient, and Society course for 1st Semester. He says that you WILL need a blood pressure kit and stethescope now (while in past semesters you didn't). You won't need scrubs or the other exam things yet. However, if you just want to get the stuff now, you'll save yourself some hassle later.

Wait on buying a scope just yet. The school may start supplying them for you with a small lab fee. This will happen, the only question is "how soon?".

Hope this helps!

microscope

I would definetly not buy a microscope right now. Even if nothing changes and the school does not supply a microscope, you get buy the same one that you are being offered for about $300 u.s. here..i beleive they try and sell it to you for about $900. I would definetly bring the video recorder...I don't know exactly what mitchdc is trying to prove by looking at everything in a microscope...I had a 100% avg in histology and looked at the microscope once the entire sememster..it is not needed. When you get here you will see that the opinion of mitchdc about this microscope is in the minority. You will definetly need the camcorder for gross anatomy lab also.

One possible solution that I don't know if they are still offering or not is the computer package. If they promise if comes with some software for histology they are lying, however, if you don't have a computer it is a decent deal. I checked on gateway and this same computer only sells for like 75 dollars less there. There is a disk available to first semester students that has all of the slides you will need to look at on it. Also if you buy the computer you can use the bookstore microscopes which are getting the job done for me 3rd semester.

supplies

try going to a medical/surgical supplies store, if they don't have anything in stock, they have catalogs, so just give them the list you need and you can pick it up from the store, im sure you can buy it online as well, i think valuemd even provides links for it somewhere... good luck!

Microphage provided this code to get an extra $10 off at allheart which is already the cheapest. We also have a BIG order form available in our download area, but by comparing prices you'll learn that BIG significantly more expensive for the same products. Let us know if you find anything better.

buying stuff

I personally don't think buying the stuff you are mentioning is needed. I bought most of the stuff also b/c I was told by Ross it was required in the first semester along with a synopsis of psychiatry and physical diagnosis book..I am now in third semester and have not used any of this stuff yet. These books may be used occasioanally as a reference I am told, however, they are available for use in the library and not needed to purchase. I here there is a possibility that you will need a b.p. cuff for first semester in the future, but I would wait and see..if you really end up needing them the bookstore hear sells them and stethoscopes. Scrubs are definetly not required until anatomy lab 2nd semester.
