Ross Spouses Organization
WELCOME TO DOMINICA!!!! My name is Nanouka Woods, and my husband is entering 3rd semester - we just checked his grades and he got STRAIGHT A'S -- I am sooo proud!! I have just been elected the President of the Spouses Organization, and I wanted to post some information here because I used this site to get myself ready when I made the decision to move with my husband to Dominica. The decision to move to Dominica with your significant other is a very personal one. You should never feel like you need to explain or defend your decision to anyone. Also, the decision is neither right nor wrong -- you must do what is best for your situation at the time and plug on forward. You should not regret any decision you make, rather learn from it and adjust accordingly. There are many spouses who stay home and many that come along. There are also many who try it out and then decide they are better off in the states. Overall, I am here to let you know, that if you have any questions about Dominica or the life of a spouse/significant other in Dominca, I can give you my opinion and tell you of my experiences. I promise to be honest and helpful and avoid exaggeration. Keep in mind, I can only offer my opinion and information on my observations. Like every post on this site, you should take it with a grain of salt, and make the best decision from the information you have gathered. Please be aware that although our club is called the Spouses Organization, membership is offered to anyone interested in joining. We have members who are the boyfriend or girlfriend of a student, so our club name should really be the Ross Support Organization (if I could rename it). We have both male and female participation and enjoy a variety of activites involving couples, children, individual members and general students. The club is very new and is growing with the help and ideas of many of our creative and outgoing members. We want the club to be a great resource for our members and their other half. We will be active in campuswide activites and hold fundraisers to contribute to the growth of our organization. Please also note that as a member, you are NOT REQUIRED to participate in any event- your presence makes the event more fun for everyone, but you will never be judged or ridiculed for choosing to do something different. Moving to Dominica is a culture shock to all of us, we need each other and support each other and make very good friends as a result. We plan to explore the island and keep ourselves busy so that we can contribute to the positive mental atmosphere that our student's need to excel in this accelerated Medical Program. We are hosting a Welcome Breakfast, Friday, January 28th - for all spouses and their significant others and children. If you are moving to Dominica or have a loved one moving to Dominica, you are welcome to PM me, or post any concerns on the board. If you know anyone with a significant other moving to Dominica, please encourage them to contact me. We can help make your transition to this Nature Island much easier. Good luck and I hope to hear from you!!! Happy New Year! Nanouka Woods Ross Spouses Organization President

Thanks for asking! If you are new student to Ross, once you arrive, you will see postings around the campus on all the clubs available to you. There are SOOOOO many, and you can be a part of one or many. Most people find a favorite and join it, but they also attend events hosted by other clubs as well. There are many clubs available to students at Ross - ethnic clubs, medical, charity, religious clubs and even a scuba club. For example, traditionally, the Black Student Association is known for many things, including throwing great parties, and when they have an event they post it around campus or email everyone through the campuswide email. No matter what club you belong to, anyone is welcome to attend the public event or party. And something to note, not all members of the Black Student Association are black, so the clubs are not closed off to any member, just like you don't have to be a spouse to be in the spouses org. When you get here, you will meet many people and make many friends, you will find the club that you think will benefit you most. If you would like to join the spouses organization you are most welcome to!!! We have had students as members in the past, and they really enjoy the events we plan. Most of your time as a student will be taken up, unfortunately, by the vast amount of studying and preparing for exams. However, it is important to realize that everyone's study habits and time necessary to retain the information is different. So if you want to wait until you arrive on Dominica to see the different club possibilities and the types of activities they plan, you are welcome to. Otherwise, welcome to our club! You can "pm" me your email address and we can talk more privately so we can exchange more information or I can help you further with any questions or help you make a good decision. Hope that helps! Good luck on your move to Dominica!!! Nanouka Woods Pres. of Ross Spouses Org.

Jobs
Hi there,
There aren't many jobs on this island for visitors. Many of us work at the bookstore for very little money, or sometimes get lucky and find jobs around campus. Some spouses work at the prep school on campus, that might be an option for you. Maybe you can apply for a deferrment..... I have to be honest with you, the jobs here are not sufficient to provide major financial benefits, they just help you get by. As for taking classes, my advice to you is.... get accepted to an online program while you are in the states, then you can work online and achieve your educational goals while living on this beautiful island. The NY Times featured Dominica in its travel section today -- pretty neat since I hadnt heard of it before my husband got accepted. There really arent any educational means for those outside of Ross. They do have a great computer lab and wireless system set up, so online classes are popular amongst us. Good luck! What a supportive person you are!

need to send a gift to my spouse
Hello,
My wife, ***************, is attending your school. Her birthday is on the 24th. I'm sending her something through the mail, but I'm sure it wont get there on time. I was told that you had some kind of spouses program that would send her a small gift or something on her birthday if I asked. Please let me know as soon as possible if this program would be available for me, otherwise I'll have to make other arrangments. If there is a cost associated then i'm willing to pay for it. If you can leave me a phone number where I can reach someone at the program. Thank You, Asim Amin 832 640 2746 ****************=edited by moderator for violation of privacy and use of an individual's personal name. Last edited by Dru : 03-22-2006 at 07:40 AM. |
