residency stats fro FMGs
this weeks JAMA had an article summing up medical education, with stats. First up, number of apps for med schools in the USA. last year, the number of apps was up for the first time in many years, even though only slightly. numbers are still 30% lower then the numbers of the mid 90s. when it came to residency, they listed the foilllowing info: 46% of KNOWN applicants who are IMGs are US citizens or permanent residents. another 22.3% are of unknown nationality(not reported). for last year, there were 67131 US grads in residencyyear one, and 26577 IMGs. there were 5838 DOs in residencys(ACGME ones). by specialty, the break downs are as follows (random sampling) IM has 40.2% IMGs, FP has 31.9%. Derm, 3.7% IMGs, ER has 4.3% IMGs, anesthesia is 24% IMG, OB is 16.5% IMG, ortho surgery is 2.1% IMG, path is 43.9% IMG, peds is 23.2% IMG, plastic surgery is 5.2% IMG, psych is 35.7% IMG, radiology is 7.5% IMG, surgrey is 18.1% IMG. for fellowships, the following are the stats: cards is 31.4% IMG, heme/onc is 40.3% IMG, pulm is 79.4% IMG, GI is 27% IMG, interventional cards is 48.2% IMG, critical care is 67.8% IMG, trauma surgery is 14.3% IMG, radiation onc is 7.1% IMG. when it comes to the arguemnet of DO vs IMG MD, at least for ACGME residencies, pretty much every specialty EXCEPT ER has many more IMGs then DOs. you can look over the stats more closely in the sept 1,04 JAMA. hope this info gives people soem idea of what they are up against, or reassures them of getting what they want.maybe mitch or doc or steph or soembody can sticky this to the other sites or the main forum too.

updated residency figures
Jim:
Any reason why ROss still shows the May 2004 list and hasn't updated it to JUly. I am sure their are more students that hve goten residencies then the number on their list.

who knows
Ross is notoriously slow with their wbpage. they seem to think that it is a lesser importance type of thing, when alot of people do rely on it for info. I know a large number of people who matched , and are not on thatlist. some just didnt bother to send in the info, some didnt want to send in the info. Its funny how many of your classmates will end up not wanting to be tracked down by ex-classmates. I guess that just goes to show thatyou shouldnt date classmates!

Yeah, I still know of 4 missing from the match list. One that went into E.R. and One to anesthesia. Both of which stated they emailed their positions to ROss.
I will repeat now....ROSS ADMIN is one of the worst I've EVER seen in my 30 years of life. When you call Ross it's like winning the lottery to be able to talk to anyone. I just can't express this enough. They all need to be fired. Keep up the good work..you dont need Ross to help you! Bottom line, avoid the situation where they can fail you. Stay at the top/middle and you wont be back here in 6 months stating ROSS failed me! |
