Follow me as I try to schedule surgery/pediatric cores at Ross

    Hello,

I am a new 7th semester student at Ross, having turned so yesterday, and am currently in my third core rotation, with my fourth core rotation scheduled. When my first four cores were scheduled, I was told that when I became a seventh semester student I would be able to schedule the remaining two rotations, surgery and pediatrics.

I called the clinical call center today and the woman on the phone laughed so hard she almost dropped the phone. I was told that it would be weeks before I would be able to schedule the cores, but if I didn't want any down time I should schedule my electives and worry about the cores later.

In part from an Ask Ross reply: "We are aware that you recently turned 7th semester ; however, as previously stated you will be contacted shortly to schedule your missing cores."

I will update as I get more information, or weekly. I post this because I think many Ross students have some question as to availability of surgery and pediatric rotations. This string will not prove or disprove a shortage of clinical spots, but it will reflect my real time scheduling timeline.

Having been through it I can attest you don't call them to schedule Peds and Surg, once you are a 7th they will go down the list starting with 10th, 9th, 8th, semesters and if any spots are open they then call 7th semesters. I was told at the start of my 7th semester the same thing, in the next couple weeks you will get a call. Reason is they update their peds/surg lists every so often a year and then give all the spots out at once. I seriously doubt they laughed at you; I have never had such experience from anyone at Ross and believe me I have called for many a reason.

Are you in any way being compensated by Ross to monitor this forum?

To all Ross students who. like me, were mistakenly told they could schedule their final rotations when they become 7th semester students, I will not be run off. I will post my real time experience in scheduling these rotations.

No but if you could suggest to them they do that would be great. I just try to bring some sense when people come in flaming the school. I do know people who have had bad experiences, but I don't like when people badmouth without giving the whole situation. I simply relayed my point, if that upsets you I'm sorry you feel that way but I can only relate what I know which doesn't add up to what you say all the time. You are free to disagree I won't stop you but I will post after and point out my knowledge.

The problem is just with these two cores.

My friend who is also a Ross student sits behind me in lecture and turned 7th on the 6/4 also. She had the exact same experience. There are just not enough spots for surgery and peds rotations and if you need ACGME as I do, the situation is even worse.

I was told by another Ross student that there are some surgery electives that you can schedule before you do the surgery core which is some help. Of course the call center at Ross did not mention that and may not even know that is the case.

I did send an AskRoss message so I could at least get some kind of response in writting as to timing, and to their credit they did answer within 24 hours. Unfortunately the answer even more vague: "You will be contacted by a clinical advisor to schedule the rest of your core rotations."

More as this situation develops. I will call Friday to see if there is any hope and post my experience then.

Any other 7th semester students having better luck??? Please share.........

are you trying to stay in one place? Maybe things have changed from when i was a 3rd yr but, myself and many many other friends, back then and recent, got 5 cores scheduled right off the bat and surgery by 7th-8th. However we all had to move at least once.

Just a friendly reminder from the other side of the fence: you're not as anonymous as you think you are here. You have alreadyexposed your academic progress (among other information I haven't bothered to track down). If you start posting email conversations and calling out specific individuals you communicate with regarding this frustration, it could result in negative consequences for you. Notice the word 'could' in the previous sentence.
