did I "mess up", by getting UWorld for COMP?

    Advertisements

The only Q bank I have is Uworld, and I was going to use it for COMP study.

Now I'm worried that I'm using all the "good" step questions for comp, and come Step 1, I'll be stuck with worse kaplan questions or whatnot.

I think if I treat COMP prep like STEP prep it can't hurt so why not use uWorld? I'm also using the DIT program for COMP prep

I personally don't think it matters when you use it. Just pass comp one way or another. If you're going to treat it like Step 1, then more power to you.

Now if you are able to buy Kaplan or Usmlerx, then it wouldn't hurt to save it. If all you're planning on buying is Uworld, then go for it.
I personally think Kaplan is too detailed and just goes into too much depth on less hight yield topics, but thats just me.

Doing as many questions before comp is important to passing it. You have the knowledge from Sem 1-4 so just get Step 1 style questions one way or another.

You're doing something more Rossies should do IMO. Reinforcing core concepts for Step 1 is essential for a good score. And starting this prep with the COMP is a good way to go.

You can also use the exammaster Q bank that we get free through Ross. Just go to the library website, then to electronic resources, and you'll find the link to it there.

It's not a bad idea to do UWorld for Comp, and if you still have it do it again for Step 1. It will only solidify your studying. If you have extra $ you can try another QBank but make sure to do all of the NBME's as well, those are really the best bet. If you aren't sure of an answer do yourself a favor and jot down the topic so you can look it up later and fill in the blanks.

I used UWorld along with DIT for Comp. Comp questions are retired Step questions anyways. Plus whatever questions you do for Comp, you'll end up doing them again when you Step study. Chances you won't recognize the questions and they'll be like new again.

    Right Thing

You are doing the right thing by doing UW. Don't save it, use it as a learning tool. Finish it once and repeat it a second time and know all the concepts real well, just don't memorize the questions and answers. When I finished UW, my practice NBMEs shot up by a lot. COMP is similar to NBMEs and I am pretty sure I would have done much better on the COMP if I had finished UW before taking it (I only finished 25% but even that helped a lot). Good Luck!!!

UW is great for the COMP. my first try i got a 64 and then I did DIT and half of Uworld and get a 76 the second time. I just took the step 2 weeks ago, and I found that UW and Kaplan and both good qbanks to do, however certain subjects are harder than others. For example, the UW biostats is much harder than Kaplan, but Kaplan anatomy and behavioral is very difficult compared to uworld. I went thru the UW question bank like 5 times, in addition to Kaplan about 1.5 times. I highly suggest getting kaplan just for the full length simulated exams, which you get 2 of. It really helps with getting used to 7 blocks of 46 questions, which doesnt seem like much but by the time you get to the 6th or 7th block you are drained. Good luck!

When I was studying for the COMP, I used Uworld as well. Don't worry about doing questions on there because not only will it help you with the COMP but the more exposure you get to the same questions the better you will learn the material. Many people do uworld twice before taking the step so I wouldn't worry too much. And if you are really interested in doing completely new questions, you can always sign up for kaplan medical which, IMO, are just as good if not better than Uworld.
