i understand the cafeteria on campus is nonexistent at this point. i am arriving august 27, is there anyplace to eat until school starts, or should i bring a bow and arrows and hope (shoot) for the best?

of course there are places to eat. the shacks will be closed, but you have a wonderful array of options including chinese food, italian that's not always open, chinese food, coconut beach restaurant, chinese food, one indian restaurant that only opens for dinner, chinese food, perky's pizza, and chinese food.

good. at least there's some digestable food. i don't mind chinese at all, as long as it's a little better than Panda Express over here.

    better than panda???

after a couple of weeks when you've got chinese food coming out of your ears, you'll be singing a different tune...no matter how much you love chinese food.

    panda express

I'm more of a Wok n' Roll kinda person myself.

The chinese food down here has a different ... aura.
The egg rolls are not what you'd call an egg roll in the US.

But eh. I been eating mostly chinese this semester and still alive to tell about it. So...

But truly, the loss of the campus cafeteria (diner type food) took a major slice off the range of options down here.

The shacks are mostly variations of chicken which means:
curry, something over rice, something in a pita, sandwiched, grilled, boiled, stirfried.
Some vegs, a not-bad-pizza, fruit juices and french fries.

There used to be beef but a madcow scare got them banned.
...fade out to the wail of a lonely saxophone.

All this and they're scared about madcow .

The chinese food is definetly different, but I've had MUCH MUCH worse. It's actually really good when you get here, but after eating it for a semester it looses it's pazas.

I heard the cafeteria is reopening in September, can anybody confirm/shoot down my hopes and dreams? I just want something different.

    Foods

The cafeteria rumors have been going for ages now, I talked to an American (not student) who wanted to open something at the school but he said the school was toughing up on him. Maybe some rich student (spouse) could volunteer to open something for us, poor, loan dependent students, but don’t count on it.
You’ll survive just fine without the shacks during the break; just make sure you enjoy Chinese food and pizza.
The bow and arrow would actually be a good idea, only the only wildlife I’ve seen around here are cows....hehehe. Oh, and don’t ask me how come we see cows, but meat is nowhere to be found. A Dominican conundrum.
Come on "bamo-nos", everybody lets go, come on lets get to it, I know that you can do it"

as long as i'm meeting my daily calorie requirement and not starving, i'm good.

unlike most people, I ate cafeteria food all through college. I think i can handle it.

according to one of the deans, they ARE working on reopening the cafeteria soon (didn't say when). they are apparently planning on expanding it and making it like a "student center" kind of a thing.

    pasta

My son seems to cook and eat alot of pasta nd seems to be surving. He also eats chinese and at the shacks. Once or twice a semester he goes to Potsmouth for good seafood. When he come home its steak and burgers for two weeks. One more semester left and he can get good Cuban food in Miami.
When you become my age you will realize all of the hard work and studying was worth the effort.
"60 years young" another 60 to go if my doctor sons keep me alive with free prescriptions!!
