    Recommended Books?

I see the list of Books for the first semester a long long one. So what is the deal about the Recommended books? Should I go ahead and purchase all of them? What is it about school-recommended vs. student-recommended? Which one would be more reliable?

    books

personally, the only book i recommend getting for 1st semester is biochem. the school uses dr. meisenberg's medical biochemistry book. dr. meisenberg is the head of our biochem dept. a lot of students like this book, but some don't. i personally like lippincott biochem better.

genetics has a nice departmental packet that has all the info you need. i wasted money on my genetics book -- never even opened it.

the histo professors have pretty good handouts too, but a few students do read the junquiera book.

as for the recommended review books:
dr. laville (biochem prof) likes and recommends pre-test biochem. it's a good book with tough questions and explanations on the answers. brs is good for histo.

BRS Histology is good for reviewing for mini's, Pretest Histology is good for the shelf exams. BRS biochem sums everything pretty nicely.

I've used Miesenburg's book religously. Junquira, in my opinion, is better for starting a fire then learning anything. I've read Gartner and Hyatt for histo, and I think it's a great book. I've noticed more people reading it then Junqueria. I also like the Developing Human for embryo. I think Laymans is to cluttered for actually reading. I've used it a little in PBL, but not for class.

The BRS are great, but just use them to review what you already know. I wouldn't get them though, they're on reserve at the library and you can just check one out for a couple of hours.

An extra word, some students don't read books at all. The handouts suppossedly give you all the info that you need to know. I'm a little skeptikal of this, and I doubt I would of done as well as I had on the first mini if I hadn't read everything 3 or 4 times.

My suggestions for success. READ READ and when you've memorized the chapter. Read it again .
