Upperclassmen: Any study tips for 1st Sem?

So, our first week is over and I've heard that each professor has his/her own tendencies for questions on the minis. What should we be looking for? For example, I heard that for Histo Dr. M.M likes to test those ** points she puts on her slides.

Also, for Anatomy what level of detail do we have to know? Dr. V has thrown a ton of stuff at us and it's daunting to memorize all this. Is the best way to keep going into lab and going over the cadaver? Should I try to just memorize everything in the baby Netter's plus the blue boxes in MDA? Thanks for any advice!

Listen to me when I tell you this:

I am now a practicing anesthesiologist who was on "the rock" starting in 2001.

Study the old tests. Study the old tests. Study the old tests. Saving that, do subject board-review questions.

If you do not know how to get your hands on the old tests, you are in deep doo-doo.

That's all you need to know. Pass the test. What ultimately matters is your Step 1 score and the letters you get from your away rotations that you will set-up on your own once you get back to the U.S., where people - who are known by programs you want to get into - will hopefully say nice things about you.

Everything else is meaningless. Study the old tests. Your key now is to survive. Everything else is meaningless.

    Trust me.

Well thanks for filling in ...But the professors here have become aware of tht and no longer test questions from old tests...Some "nice" students told the profs. them about old tests, and now it's not like how it used be in your time.

    For 2nd semester students !

OK I now this tread is for 1st semester students, but I didn't want to start another one for this question...

So a lot of upper semester students have been warning me about Dr. B ( the one from Germany ) in the biochem department, especially his lecture on Vitamins and Minerals...

Tht lecture felt like I was in a nutrition class not in Biochem. But any way, so they were saying hit this lecture hard....

So my question is, how is this prof. overall...? Are his questions super hard or just plain retarded, or wht ?

Another thing for second semester is do well on your first 3 mini. You are going to need the cushion for that final. Trust me, it's going to make a big boo-boo on your grade.

They have to. There's only so many ways you can ask questions about the Kreb's cycle. Go back far enough and you'll find repeats.

And, get USMLE World or Kaplan or whatever and start studying for Step 1 as soon as you get down there. Use the subject reviews for whatever you're covering. Do a lot of questions.

That's what Ross teaches to - the Step 1 test. They have to. That's the barometer, ultimately, about how well they're doing as a school in comparison to all other schools. Actually, for you guys, that's basically the only test that matters (and Step 2-CK, if you bomb Step 1).

Again, trust me. I succeeded. I'm working in PP making $270k/yr right now. It was a long road, but I made it. You want to be like me, not just another joe blow who failed second semester and got a 183 on Step 1.
