RUH student lounge

Our members don't see this ad.
I'm comtemplating staying in RUH my first semester, I know they dont have a kitchen, but I never cook, the rooms are small, but I really just need a place to sleep shower and occasionally chill, i mean wont I be on campus most of the time anyways, the only thing thats holding me back is no internet in the room and no cable/tv included with the room, which could be a good thing since both are HUGE distractions, but I'm posting for those who live or have lived in RUH the following questions

1. Is the student lounge open 24/7? Having internet whenever I need it is crucial
2. Is there cable TV in the lounge? I really dont mind giving up cable TV at all if not for some weekend football
3. Somewhat off topic, are there bars/restaurants around campus where students go to watch college football games saturdays? if so I dont really need a TV in my room (before I get blasted for asking this question, yes I understand I'm there to get a medical education and not watch college football), just something I'd like to know

lounge is pretty much always open...the latest ive been in there is like 2am or so

you can have internet in your room you just have to pay it seperately to the company that provides it (no its not wireless)

watch games at the bars? do you think jurrassic park would have a fancy bar with tvs playing the latest game? cmon now....youll be lucky if u get a clean glass

If you manage your time well you can set aside a few hours for a football game on the weekend. Not only that it is probably a good thing if you can set aside a few hours of enjoyment time weekly just to keep away from burnout.

I definitely watched college football every weekend while on the island. the Dominica cable, although stolen from networks accross the US, is cheap and you can see more CFB games than you did at home. And if you look at the computers in the library during CFB season, every male computer has ESPN Gamecast in full force.

Thumbs down Pics of an RUH room

According to their website, dechamp (a bar) says that if American football is on they're serving burgers and fries.. so you should be able to watch it there, just don't know if they show college as well as nfl. I would think that would be your best and possibly only option here.

The RUH 'lounge' is a room with maybe 4 or 5 old 1970's thrift store style couches/chairs pushed against 3 walls to form a U all facing a tv.. it's not big or a flat screen or anything. I'm not sure if it's open all hours, I would think so.. You can get wireless in there and it is air conditioned but you're at the mercy of whoever is in there before you as to what you get to watch on tv.

Just to maybe give you a more accurate view of what an RUH room looks like, I've posted some pictures below. It is bare bones as you can see in the photos. Not much besides four white(ish) walls. In my opinion, spend a little more to get your own place with cable and internet. If you're not that picky, you can find something for not much more money just to have those conveniences. FYI, We stayed at RUH only for a few days when we came to check out the island before we moved here. It's nice to be close the the pool (but any Ross student/spouse can use it- not just RUH residents) and the beach, but I don't know how someone wouldn't go crazy there. It feels like a prison. Also, we were there during the 'dry' season and the very loud sound of the rain on the tin roof woke us up almost every night. Anyway, enjoy the pics. Make an informed decision that is smartest for you.

ps- to answer your question the tv in the lounge does have cable. And I would bet money in vegas that it would cost you more to buy a tv here and get your own cable/internet in your room than it would be to find another place. So whatever you do, don't even let that be an option to you. (I know they say it is on the housing site. It isn't. It would be way too much money.)
