Verizon has world phones that can use GSM and can be used if your willing the pay the $2.29 per min, and you have to call Verizon to get it unlocked before you come to the island. |

You should be able to unlock that Verizon global phone, pop in the SIM card from Lime or Digicel and use those prepaid minutes.
If your attached to your US number you might have to freeze your account or pay the bill regularly. However, I'm not sure what happens if you have a smartphone (e.g. blackberry) because Verizon might still make you pay for their data plan while you're away. I got the Digicel that Alexis was selling on the bus from the airport... didn't know at the time if it was a good deal, but for $20/phone with like like 50EC on it or something you can't go wrong... yeah, it's kinda a simple- nofrills - samsung, but between my wife and I we spend $30US or less per month on minutes. It's all you need to stay in touch with ohter people on the island.
Skype seems to be THE most popular VoIP |
