Thread: american airlines baggage requirements

So i was under the impression with AA we got 2 checked bags no 1 over 50 and total under 70 lbs. However after "confirming" this with AA we actually get 2 under 50 and total 100lbs! I think im in love! Also still get 1 carry on and 1 personal item. best part is since this is international flight no baggage fees either! Be on the island this time tomorrow!

thats always been the case with traveling in AA.....the 70lb limit is Dominica Airport requirements.....however I never seen them weigh the bags so you might get away with it

^ Not the case when a bunch of us 4th'ies left the island last week man. They were brutal. The previous policy allowed us to pay for any extra weight, but this time we had to chuck out any extra baggage. What a way to leave the island forever.

that sucks major....they do that stuff on purpose so they can pocket the stuff for themselves....i just took my bookbag and packed it as tightly as a i could i think it was heavier than my check in

But since medic is flying into the island....they might not weigh it but who knows...better safe than sorry

well i imagine since its AA the whole way with a 2 hr layover in SJU they will only weigh it in miami, and it just gets passed on from there...lets cross fingers because there is no way i'm getting it down to 70 lbs without losing some stuff i really want..lol

Can I ask where you flew from? I was trying to get a ticket that wasn't overnight with AA but everything has an overnight stay in San Juan. I'm flying from MD.

flew from MIA to SJU to DOM. i have talked with a few fellow classmates and past MERPers and seems some ppl were allowed 100 and others 70. the 70 limit was more strictly enforced at NY airports and SJU if you stayed overnight (have to claim and recheck baggage) I brought mine to the airport outside MIA and they didnt even weigh the things. Probably had about 70lbs in one bag alone! O well better for me. However they (AA) sent a chase plane with more luggage, not sure if this is new for them or not and could be why now they allow (or some do) 100 lbs. maybe the others arent up to date on current policy?

Chaser plane? never heard of that and would definitely doubt they would do that......what they always do is push everybodies bags back 2-3 days simply bc everybody is bringing the limit of check in and carry ons (and those carry ons end up being checked in temporarily when you fly on the turboprop)....so you are pretty much flying with the bags of other students that arrived earlier

When you fly AA you get into a possible loophole for 100lbs since that is company policy for weight limits. The 70lb limit of Dominica comes into play on your direct flight there so SJU, barbados, st maarten etc will check for that limit. Once your bags make it to jurassic park, you are out of the woods as they dont have weighers for incoming flights.

With local flights like LIAT, caribbean airlines they have company limits of 50lbs so you will need to meet those requirements upon checkin.

i was under same impression, however after we landed and they said ALL luggage from that plane was taken off, about 7 or 8 people didn't have theirs. they said there is another plane about 30 mins behind with more luggage, and sure enough it was on there. not sure how or if there were some people on that plane as well, but they all flew American. only thing i can assume is there was some sort of chaser plane unless they added a stop on the way to somewhere else?

Definitely had to be people on that plane bc that would be a loss of money for AA. Lucky you guys only had to wait 30 mins. Thats how I planned my liat flights the 2nd or 3rd last flight from that departure airport for that day so by sundown im guaranteed my bags. When Ive flown AA its been days on peak time or same plane on off peak.
