first semester books/ equipment

Why does the welcoming packet indicate that first semester students should by their books and equipment while in the states. The packet says that the bookstore doesn't sell first semester books. From reading many postings on this site it seems to infer that the bookstore does have these books.

Nope

Nope, I think you've missed something. The BOOKSTORE only sells new first semester textbooks to students who order ahead. Its just not large enough to hold all the extra books. Bookstores International Group states in their mailing that they DO NOT SELL 1ST SEMESTER TEXTS in Dominica and encourages you to buy you books ahead of time.

REMEMBER THAT THE B.I.G. Group is not the UNIVERSITY - they are an entirely separate company.

However, you may be able to find STUDENTS selling USED textbooks here on the island this week and next.

Hope that clears things up!

less BIG

I got my stuff from BIG this morning.

I asked them how many customers they had this semester compared to previous semesters. The staffer who attended me said this semester's haul was much smaller than normal, only 70 customers this time. I forgot to ask how many they usually have.

The staffer thinks its because Dr. Clutter has been advising new students to shop around. I should have mentioned this discussion group.

Hopefully this will be a trend and BIG will adjust to whatever is causing the competitive pressure. But don't get your hopes up too much. With transport, taxes and tarifs, the RUSM area will stay a seller's market for a while longer, CARICOM or no CARICOM.

re:

I picked up all my stuff as well. Its not fun hearing people laugh at you walking away from the BIG pickup area. JK.

It was somewhat of a ripoff. The printer had a 200% markup from the United States. And people I came in with bought microscopes here from other students for as little as $175.

I dont mind paying a bit extra for the textbooks though. I like new and fresh books for everything I take so I'll pay a bit more than others. But I also did some other books that were recommended here from other students. One of them was selling the wheater's book and cdrom seperatly even though they came together. I'll just copy the cdrom myself from someone else.

I managed to walk through the bookstore before they closed it and I really didnt see any 1st semester books there. But mind you I wasn't looking very hard so I prob missed alot.
