higher GPA but did not pass step

I've been talking with a lot of my friends the last week and apparently a lot of people did not pass step 1 this time around. When I first heard of some of the people that failed, I was a little glad in a weird way since it means I'm not alone. I don't want to sound mean, but misery loves company. This one girl had a higher GPA than I did and still failed. I couldn't help but chuckle a little. That was a little encouraging. Back to busting my butt reading big robbins. I hope i beat the batch that is taking it for the second time. Then at least I could gloat to somebody, even if it is the bottom of the barrel.

-just trying to understand-does Ross really help you in terms of passing the steps, or is it one of the schools that require you to study a lot for the steps out of class?

Students from Ross score anywhere from 169-269 on their USMLE tests. You can't depend on any school to get you to pass. You simply have to put in the work yourself. Don't believe any rumours that you hear from medical students since its probably the same recycled rumours that they heard. USMLE is also a test that can highly depend on how you can do on that particular day. another day, who knows?

rossmdhopeful, i have been reading most of your previous post, i must admit, you are kind of rude!! how can you be happy if you see other's fail like you? men, you need to get off valuemd and start studying!!! we have alot of people(rude) like you in my class, and we are all doing the same rotations at the same hospital and no attending give a crap if you are from ross, sgu, auc, aua, etc or you are 4.0 or not. just sit down, study and shutup!! you are annoying!!! go ask your cardiology dady for advise and quite posting your negetive comments here.

Whats worse, repeating a semester and doing good on the steps the first time around, or having a good gpa and failing the step once?

It doesn't have to one or the other. Learn how to play the game and apply the material while you are doing Basic Sciences and it will be easier studying for Step 1. One way or the other, you have to be able to apply material on Step One. Its not just about memorization.

I'm just trying to get a feel for which residency programs consider more important - the step scores, or gpa.
