Question on 2008 Match

Does anyone know if the 2008 Match (See below) is for all three semesters? I think I read the size of the classes were about 300.

I counted the spots below and the total to approx. 459. I am trying to figure out what the precentage of Matched grads for 2008. If this is for all three semesters what are the average size of the classes? Unless someone knows the % of Matched for 2008 ... it would save me some time for trying to figure this out.

I would think there would be some variables too. Like who was pre-matched and not on the list.

What are some reason on why you would not get match? Bad interviewer? Step scores low? Thanks!

Students have to send in their match information to ROSS. It isn't automatically sent to them, so if students don't report it, it isn't incorporated into the list, that's why the numbers are a bit lower.

only one match

The Match is only once a year in March so the results reflect three semesters. You must remember that anyone who pre-matched or matched in specialties outside of the normal Match prcoess would have to send their info to Ross in order to appear on the list.

im pretty sure ross did, as auc did as well. however, prematches (and there always are quite a few of them) will always need to be reported the old fashioned way.

Say the 459 is accurate and we use a 10% variable for pre-matched ....

From the website it says the class sizes are 350 students

3 (Sem.) X 350 = 1050

Lets say there is a 30-40% dropout rate from start to finish ... 315 - 420 students drop out per year ... (At least from what I have read in here)

1050 - 315 = 735 (30% Drop out)
1050 - 420 = 630 (40% Drop out)

Match List 459 + 10% pre-matched = 505 Students

That gives the Match rate between 69% - 80% Approx.

I know there are a lot of variables ... If anyone knows some hard facts please fill in the blanks

Thoughts?

...

I started in May 2004, and matched on schedule. I will tell you our class size was no where near 350. In my 5th semester class there were 133 people on the class roster and this included transfer students. So I would say the numbers are a little off. There were alot of prematches in my class as well, some of which have been reported and some have not. I don't know the percentage of those who matched, but i would say that if you pass step 1 on the first attempt, have good interviewing skills, and are not trying for any of the uber competetive specialties, you will match. Of the people I know who did not match they either had failed a step (some multiple times) or had mediocre scores and were going for a very competetive specialty.

Hope that helps

That is good news ... That means the 2008 Match is closer to 80-90%

Why do you think so many people dropped out? Even if you started in the high two hundreds that is like a 50% drop out rate.

Thanks

1st Semester, 1st Mini. That's the simplest explanation. I'd say about 5-10% don't even make it that far, they try living here for two weeks and go home, but most of the rest of the dropouts occur because they fail Biochem on that first mini or Physiology on the 3rd. The rest is trickle: a handful in second, a larger amount in third, and basically no one in 4th. Then a group no one can really tell the size of can't pass the Comp or the Step after 3 times. With them changing the grading policies to where every semester stands on its own (they used to average 1st and 2nd, and then again with 3rd and 4th) I think it'll even out, but 1st will still be the worst.

Ross will never tell you the dropout rate from admission to match, but 50% is a believable number.
