1st semester final grades

Does anyone know when first semester final grades are coming out? And in terms of the final MPS, how does PBL get factored in, if it does at all? Is the final MPS just a proportionate average of the mini and final MPSs?

PBL is factored into your final grade... so add 5pts to your final grade if you've been receiving 10s all semester and so on... the grades usually comes out about a week or 2 after the semesters over... so enjoy your break and it should come out soon.. the final mps is usually btw the previous mps through the semster...

It's not a percentage. Those are all the MPS in each subject or Minimum Passing Score.

Yes they ARE percentages (roughly speaking). The percentage of questions a person must answer correctly in order to pass (weighted of course; different mini's are weighted differently).

Roughly speaking b/c you need to factor in PBL into your final grade (the PBL grade almost always adds a point or so to a person's final grade).

Those are the minimum final scores each person must achieve to pass the semester. Whether you say you must get a 62% or just you must get a 62 to pass, it's the same thing.

MPS's

Anyone...

Is the FINAL MPS for each subject (received at the end of the semester) the average of all the MPS's (from Mini's 1,2,3 and Final)?

We should all strive to pass.....however:
Should I be concerned with my individual MPS score per subject, or the average MPS's per subject?

Forgive my ignorance...I'm a 1st Semester

The final MPS (what you need to have to pass the class) is NOT the average of the MPS's on minis 1, 2, 3, and the final. It will be slightly higher than that. Don't ask me how it works. I never was able to figure out how they arrived at the number. Though, I think the way they figure out the final MPS is the same way they figure it out for each individual exam. They look at how the class performed overall and go from there. PBL is also figured into the mix somehow. The bottom line is it's not a simple average. Count on it being higher than that.

To arrive at the final MPS, they take all the students who fall between 55 and 65, and then take the midpoint value on a graph. It's called the Hofstee method. From my understanding, the students who scored above 65 or below 55 are not factored into the MPS.

So when they take all the final grades at the end of the semester, once the percentages of each mini have been determined, if the students who fall between 55 and 65 are localized at 57, then the MPS is 57, so you cannot really use the individual minis to determine the final MPS, since they don't take into account what percentage that exam is worth of your final grade.

They explained it at orientation, and had a really good graph, so if you are interested in reading more about it, you can find the powerpoint file from orientation on the gdrive.
