Thanks
Thanks for all the replies guys.
Mitch I still am not pleased with the housing options of that list (maybe we are talking about different lists) because only a few met criteria that my roomate and myself wanted. Oh well, no one is to blame, I just wish that one person was hired in miami to be a housing aid of sorts. My roomate had also been through the rossmiami forum and sublet.com without luck. Perhaps its just 80% luck to get the right housing. Good luck with the car dilemna to those discussing that concern. Dru, I will be PM-ing you and thanks in advance for the file! Happy St. Patricks Day! -Incog. |

miami housing
An excellent source for housing leads is the University of Miami off campus housing list(www.miami.edu) Many of these places allow for short term leases, are furnished, and many include phone, internet, cable, etc with rent. But definitely come down early so you can see the place ahead of time so there are no disappointments. There is also a wide range of rent prices to adjust to anyone's budget. As far as the car situation, you absolutely need a car out here. I tried renting a car for a month and it goes on an average of about $1000(economy car), since you must put some type of liability or full cover insurance because Miami is the collision capital of the U.S.;people drive horribly out here. Whoever pays $500 a month to rent either isn't opting for insurance coverage or already has some type of auto insurance back at home. It would be a great idea to get your parents to put you under their auto insurance that way it will be cheaper to rent a car.

rentals
Also most Platinum credit cards already pay for the extra insurance. Charge the car to your platinum credit card and save a lot of money.
Incognito, so its not the list being ancient that was the problem. It was actually that you were satisfied with the options listed on that list. That makes a lot more sense. One thing to look out for. You WILL pay sales tax AND accomadations tax on your rental managed by a management company. This is in addition to any price you are quoted. For example, a rent of $1000 can add up to just over $1200 with taxes. -M

partner
You pick your partner.. your partner should be a roomate or someone who lives near you b/c your clinical assignments will be identical..you will be called car pool mates. Miami is diff. than the island b/c you hardly see most of your classmates except on the 1 day of class we have (plus you see a few at small group..around 30 students). Your shedule will be exactly like that of your partner.
You also must select a partner to do physical exam's with. This can be the same or different than your assignment partner. Most people select the same sex partner (unless you have a very close opposite sex friend) b/c when you perform your exam, which is worth 25% of your grade for the semester, nothing is counted as correct that is done over clothes. You will wear a gown with underwear and bra (must be skimpy bra!) on under it, and the gown is removed during the chest exam (bra left on). If you do not have a partner a same sex partner will be assigned for you. You will have only 2 assignments with your pe partner (a demo and the exam), so you don't have to live near them. |

car cost
Mitch, yes, $500 a month, thats about 1250 isnt it? We are her for about 10 weeks counting in and out.
I never could figure it out why people rent those cars when the taxi service is so good here and there really isnt much time for monkey business just plain studies, so I think i did the right thing using Taxis. And yes, I did go up north to the Northside Home using a taxi and those drivers know the roads and locations so they beat the time an individual drives and gets bogged down in the bumber to bumper stuff her in Miami. I think i mentioned it but at least 3 other students use taxis too with NO problems getting to assigned places. On the T line, that thing is 100% reliable and leaving every few minutes taking you right into the Hyat for $1.25. I really dont understand why people post on here you need a car i Miami, its not so. |

That's great that the taxi has worked so well for you. I also know some students who take the public transit. YES, you are exactly correct - $500 per month does work out to $1250 which is a lot more than its sounds like you ended up paying. I think people choose to have their own car just out of convenience, but I guess it is not necessarily mandatory. Thanks for the suggestion.
