Do they really have access to mediasite off campus?
510 points Yes, and we non-Pacers just got the password to also access it off-campus. Now, however, rumors state that the Pace students have to enter their Ross ID, so only they have access.

510 points I really dont understand this whole policy. Either let everyone be able to access mediasite off campus, or dont let anyone access it at all except PACE students. It doesnt make sense to allow all students to access mediasite from on campus but not off campus. Whats the point?
510 points What? Of course it makes sense to let other students access mediasite on campus. What if you're sick? What if you leave the island for the weekend and miss a class on Friday? What if you slept in? What if you just don't like to listen to the incredibly slowly-speaking professors in real-time and prefer to watch their lectures in double-time? There are plenty of reasons to let non-Pace students watch mediasite on campus. Letting Pace students access it off-campus gives them the "warm-fuzzy" that they get something special.
510 points Ross cannot allow the rest of the students to access Mediasite from off campus. They would lose their accreditation with the US Medical School authorities. It would be considered "distance learning" and the Medical School authorities would revoke Ross' accreditation if Ross was found out that the majority of its students were not attending class. Ross is only allowed a small percentage of its class that can access Mediasite from off-campus. DeVry would like nothing better than to have all their students access Mediasite from off-campus as it allows for lower overhead and they could accept even more students to fill in the empty seats. However, Ross would be considered a laughing-stock of the medical school education world and would quickly lose accreditation.
Oddly enough though, I think Drexel also has an equivalent to Mediasite that is accessible by all students on- or off-campus. Can anyone explain to me why Drexel can do it and Ross cannot?
Rosalind Franklin has an equivelant also -- don't know how that works out. Does suck about not being able to use mediasite off campus though
510 points Several medical schools have access to lectures online. I know Texas A&M does, too. This is not so that students can just skip lectures all the time. There is an attendance policy at all of these schools (I'm sure) but I doubt they take roll. Using the mediasite or its equivalent is more of a study tool, instead of sitting in lecture with a tape-recorder. Ross keeps all students from being able to access mediasite from the states for reasons of distance-learning. I know a lot of students would love to fly home for a couple of weeks and mediasite from there, but that's where the school would get in trouble with accreditation. There's a fine line between using it for study and using it for distance learning. That's all I know!
Just to clarify, Ross is not accredited by anyone anywhere in the USA. The only accrediting body that recognizes Ross is the Dominica Medical Board. Where the whole "distance learning" scenario can cause problems is when meeting requirements for state licensure after residency. Many, or even most, states have certain regulations that require students from foreign schools (regulations that don't apply to students from US schools like Drexel) to be physically present on an actual campus for a minimum number of months in order to be recognized for licensure purposes.
