Question about Appealing a Dismissal from Ross

To appeal a dismissal, does a student have the option of simply writing a letter to the Chairperson (you know who) OR appearing before the Committee itself? If those are the two options, is it better to just write the letter or to appear before the committee? Is there a greater success rate with either one? Thank you for any input.

When I was on the island , there was a girl in my class who appeared before the committe due to her being dimissed for failures . She was approved , moved on and is now completing clinicals . If you are appealing failed courses taken on the island , you are required to meet with the committe .

thanks for the response.. here's what the dismissal letter says:

To appeal this recommendation, you must submit an appeal in writing to the Chairperson of the Committee by 8:00 am on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 and no later than 12 noon of that day. You may fax your written request to The Campus Registrar or e-mail it to _______@rossmed.edu.dm
In addition, if you wish to appear before the Committee, please make an appointment, by telephone, with the Registrar’s Office by 3.45 p.m. on Friday August 31, 2007.

It sounds like going before the committee is optional. Is it?

I would appeal in person. Make it sound like you really want another chance! Don't send an email..

Have a back up plan . You should already have applied to SMU etc after hearing that you were dismissed . You haven't made it thru the 1st four semesters and you are dimissed . If they don't take you back , then what do you do ? Commit suicide ? You should already have contacted other schools .

Before even going thru the appeal process , you should really ask yourself what lead to your dismissal . Some people are approved and others are not . I 've seen people make it thru after appealing so it can be done . I think things are changing now in that you really need to convince them to give you a third chance . Be prepared for them to reject you since it appears things are changing . In your situation you have to be prepared for everything .

.I"m assuming that you failed repeated courses or you failed too many courses at one time . With MPS being around 58 - 60 which includes 5 points for pBL , answers are needed .The main question is what would you do different ?

If you still feel medicine is for you , then regardless of Ross's decision , you must make some changes before moving on again . I'm sure you will be successful in the end .

I do agree with having a plan B however I am not so sure that failing at one Caribbean school and moving on to the next is that great of an idea. Truthfully, going to a med school in the Caribbean is bad enough, according to the aamc, but failing out of one is worst. I am sure there are people out there who were in the same situation and got their residency after transferring to a diff. caribb school. But how certain are you that you will be one of those people. Go do your appeal but if that doesn't go through as planned then you should consider what I said above.

Failing out and being dismissed is not a great idea either . This is failing out in the earlier semesters , not even finishing basic sciences . So at this point , its not about great ideas just whats needed to be done in order for this person to move on and eventually graduate as an md.

Being a transfer student is not bad at all . Tons of people have done it , some by choice and many because the choice was essentially made for them .

This is the reality .

and what if you PASSED all the basic sciences but not the COMP (likely test anxiety) and were dismissed? Any opinions on why a re-application might be denied if others are being given chances after failing?
