USMLE Attempts

Hi NYGIRL117,

I can understand your anxiety, I personally know somebody who took step 1 4 times under ross umbrella and was not successfull, however this person was not at all applied. At the end, he/she transfered out.

The point is, you can appeal before Ross comittee after they cut you off for failing 3 times, they may consider and give you another try. But PLEASE try not to fail a 3rd time, not only because the problems you will face with the school, but also the hazards you will encounter while applying for residency. Is not an easy world out there, and many residencies will not even take a look if you have any attempts (they use it as a screening tool for interviews...)

My 2 cents, take a carefull look at your stats and focus on those subjects you were weak at and that you know you can improve (for example: when I studied for this test, I knew there was no way I could learn anatomy like the kaplan book teaches you...so what I did was to focus on those that I had an opportunity to solidify my knowledge like path, micro, etc....) Doing questions is key, do not worry if you get them wrong when studying just learn from it and do as many as you can.

Finally, don't sit if you are too insecure (I know is easier said than done...) sitting in front of that computer having the confidence that you will succeed at the end is of outmost importance!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Luck!!!!
PGY-1/class 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most states don't have limits on Step 1 attempts. Some do (Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Alaska, Idaho, Maryland, and Minnesota are the only ones I believe), but the majority don't. Even if you can't get licensed in those states you can still become a physician for the VA Hospitals and work in any of those states, since VA jobs require an active license in ANY state. VA jobs are very competitive salary-wise as well.

Of course, try and pass all the Steps on the 1st attempt.

There was a ross student I rotated with once who had failed the step 1 three times and the step 2 at least twice. He was still around after failing so Ross must've given him a chance.

Smile original point of thread

to the OP - Don't focus on what ifs " . Just do your best . You need to have the right mindest . I forgot to tell you the most important thing that has helped me - PRAYER !!

I'm not trying to convert you to christianity , but knowing that nothing is impossible with my god enables me to know that no matter what the situation , If if give my best , God will do his part .

Goljan talks about miracles in his lectures . He is obviously a god minded person . YOU NEED TO HAVE FAITH ! Of course faith without works is dead , but hard work and being positive will enable you to be successful

And I can't say it enough - Don't let cold souls make you feel like you are not meant to be a doctor . Go and pass that stupid test !!

These are some videos I think can help you :

YouTube - brian tracy fear of failure=
Fear of Failure

YouTube - Brian Tracy: You Are What You Think=
You are what you think

Good Luck !!

I have always been a bad test taker. I took the NBME and scored around 190 twice. BORDERLINE. Is there perhaps a way to get a tutor to help me master answering questions? And how long should I take before my next try?
If you don't mind, how were your grades like at Ross? Just would like to see if there's a correlation.
