I use skype with the video camera - works great, have had zero problems with it - as long as you dont use on campus. If the internet is slow at your apartment you can upgrade for cheap (with like 6 people it cost me 12 ec more a month to max out our connection)
510 points I use Skype, too, as do many of my friends. It's cheap and works fine. I have the calls forwarded to my cell phone when I'm away from the computer. There's a significant delay when I do that, but it's okay for important calls, or just to tell the person I'll call them back when I get home. I think some people prefer Vonage so they can use an actual phone.
510 points I used to use Skype first semester. I got tired of it cutting in and out on me so I gave up on it. For the last three semester, I just use my cell phone to call home. It's really not that expensive. The going rate is between .33 EC to .50 EC per minute. In US dollars, that's about $.13 to $.19 per minute. If you get in on one of the double minutes deals that they run periodically throughout the semester, you can divide those prices in half.
When you have Skype or one of the other internet phone companies, you have to use your computer. It's not very practical to make calls from campus. People kind of look at you funny when you talk to your computer in classroom six. When I use my cell phone, I can call as I'm walking home. It's like multi-tasking. That's what med schools all about anyways.
does anyone use skype in?
i hear you get your own local number etc. hows the quality?
If you want to do something, then you will find a way.
If you want to do nothing, then you will find an excuse.

510 points I got suckered into the buy one year get one year free by sunrocket. That one really panned out well![]()
510 points What's the actual price difference between vonage and skype?
Skype is a form of VOIP. It is not better, just a different flavor. The point about calling home by thecure4u is well made. International minutes are cheap.
When my fiancee wants to talk to her family, she frequently uses GoogleTalk. The Internet speed here is a blazing 300kbps, 1/20 of the 6 Megabits I had in Vegas, and an even smaller fraction of the FIOS lines now available.
Dr. K***, anatomy prof and third semester student, apparently uses some VOIP program on his PDA. I'd run SIP or something else cool, but my focus is here.
You can cheaply use Asterisk along with a pay service to provide you with a telephone number for a penny or two a minute. If you're nerdcore enough, you can even have it forward your calls to your cellphone/pda/landline, etc.
Hope this helps.
So get on with it!
What does not happen today, will not be done tomorrow, and you should not let a day slip by.
Let resolution grasp what's possible and seize it boldly by the hair; it will not get away and it labors on, because it must.
