    which can i get?

    Hi Everyone...

I made up a list of things I absolutely can't live without... food-wise. Are all these things available at a reasonable price on the island and if not, which ones are harder to get your hands on?

    milk
    bread
    eggs
    diet pepsi
    fish
general seafood ie imitation crab meat!
    lettuce
    onions

    thank you so much!

You can always find bananas, coconuts, grapefruits (they're HUGE), apples (imported), carrots, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatos, cabbage, oranges, pumkin, breadfruit, and potatos. Anyone has any more to add?

You forgot christophene (chayote), bell peppers, plantains, pumpkin (I know you said this, but it is really squash) and papaya. Seasonally there are guavas, mangoes, and a few others. There is no shortage of fresh food and vegetables here if you know where to look (head to Roseau on the weekends for the Farmer's Market).

What, no one says a word about the spinach (not the kind you're used to in the states, but it's called spinach here), celery, basil, sweet potato, chilies (OH LORD THEY'RE HOT), onions, garlic, watermelon, cantaloupe, passion fruit, starfruit, limes, and tangerines?

You know, hon, half that stuff's on our shopping list this week. :P *prods at UnknownHero*

Are there local markets within walking distance from school where I can get fruits and veggies?

Market, that is every Saturday from 6am-8am ish is about a 20-30 minute walk from campus although you can catch a transport most days. There is a larger Market in Roseau and the school provides transportation there. The shacks at the school and D's sell fresh produce everyday but it will be more expensive than going to the Market every week.

She's right, basically you can get any fresh fruit or vegetable you want on the island. What we haven't found here is broccoli (thank God), and the lettuce here is real lettuce and not iceberg. Now getting fresh meat or even nonfrozen and imported meat here is a real pain, unless you don't mind paying through the nose for low quality meat. Most of the beef is expensive or imported crap, and chicken is hard to get a hold of (eggs are really easy though). The only place we've really found edible chicken is in Roseau, and they always have fresh fish there for prices that would be a steal in the States (if you like Tuna and Mahi Mahi, although they call that Dolphin here).

To add to the above post about meat, We find the best thing to do is bring your own. We've already posted about how to do that a few times but if you don't find our posts, PM us and we'll tell you what we do.

The only brocolli I found was frozen, but hey, it's there. Be careful about fresh vegetables, though. Be sure you wash them well and soak them in salt water if you eat them fresh. You don't want to get worms or other bugs. Also, I haven't seen an apple since I've been here, but I've heard rumors that they exist. Be prepared to buy what you find when you find it. Don't bother with making a grocery list...most of your items probably won't be there when you need them.

Apples are everywhere around campus. I've seen them at D's and I've seen them at the bookstore so I don't think it's going to be too much trouble to find. Also, my girlfriend threatened me with a crown of FRESH broccoli today. We found it at IGA Supermarket (in Roseau, right by Whitchurch) if anyone is interested.
