    Anybody used "bookstore International group?"

    Hi,

I've been accepted for the May term and was going over the list of books and equipment needed for class. On the Ross website, there was an order form from the Bookstore International group. The same people who run the bookstore on the island. They said they could get all the materials ordered and have them ready for the students by the first day of orientation. I wanted to know if anybody is familiar with their services and how would you rate them? Also, it was mentioned that they don't stock up on first sememster books in the bookstore on the island. I wanted to know how hard those books are to come by. If anybody wants to check the site to see if the books are over-priced, here's the link. http://www.rossu.edu/files/Jan%20Med...0form%2007.pdf

For current students, how helpful were the recommended books? And were you able to rent a microscope on the island?

    Thanks so much in advance.

Whatever you do NOT purchase a microscope. They have not be used on the Island since around 2005. You will recieve a free CD during registration with all the slides on it to view on your computer. Also, The first semester books are readily available in the bookstore on the island although they may eb bought up quickly in teh begining but they do reorder books. Some recommended books are helpful, others are not. If you do not want the hassle of bringing or shipping brand new books to Dominica the bookstore is the way to go. If you would like used books waiting for your arrival on the island, check us out at Welcome to Island Thrift. Your last option is to buy your books from students down here, although I cannot guarentee that you can get every book that you would like without having to go to the bookstore or Island Thrift for the remaining books you could not get your hands on. Island Thrift comes in handy because we will track down the books for you prior to your arrival. Either way I recommend that you do not ship books or pack them because of their weight. BRS, PRETEST, FIRST AID, or any other review series are light enough to pack in your suitcase if you can find a good deal at half.com or amazon.com.

I wasn't planning on bring the books myself. The company noted on the order forms that they will ship the books...of course, they charge shipping fees and applicable tax. And they also deal with the customs tax and stuff.

    Ross Bookstore

1 Coke and 1 bag of chips - $15 EC

BRS Biochemistry book - $152 EC

Getting ripped off by the bookstore for 4 semesters....priceless

    Buy from other students

Everyone should just wait until the island. You may want to bring kaplan books or first aid if you want them. Besides that maybe a physical exam book. You dont have to pay taxes on things you bring in your suitcase. A lot of students will be selling books the few days before classes start and a few days after they begin. Dont worry, they always have plenty of books including brs, hy, and textbooks. They also sell a lot of other things you may need. Plus do not fall for any of the extras BIG tries to sell you. The microscope will never ever be used, they dont even hand out slides anymore. The CD is all you will need. If you go down before the previous semester is over, there is even a fourth semester sale. You can get anything you need there. A lot of students would buy stuff then and sell it at the begining of the next semester for a profit. Island thrift would buy all the books there as well for cheap and resell them the next semester.

Yes you can. And yes, we do buy the books from current students and resell them to incoming students, this is no secret. Island Thrift is for you if you want used books at a good price without having to run around and find them yourselves. We also sell electronics, household goods and unused toiletries, all available for reserve prior to coming down to Dominica. Could you find a better deal by finding students who are selling their books? It's possible but most students will base their resell prices on ours and sell their items for around the same amount. Some students will sell their books for more than our prices and others less. What we save you though is time. You do not have to make more than one stop for everything you want, especially if you place a preorder for us.

There really wasnt much running around, all the students are right next to the library. You can walk by a couple of students and even bargain with the price. If you buy more than one they come down even lower. I bought most of my books from other students, only paid more than island thrift once. It was because I bought a brand new rohen anatomy still in plastic. The students also sell a lot of household goods and electronics, usually really cheap. Im not saying island thrift isnt good. Just that the students selling the books were usually cheaper. If you cant find it from the students you can always go there.

So don't buy the books from Book store Int'l then ?

Yeah coz I saw some of the price on Amazon and they were cheaper than that book store Int'l ! I still didn't check out other websites, but I guess it kind will be much better if I get it from them as they will make sure my stuff reaches there !

Anyways, now if they say it is required, is it still required ? Or are they just trying to get our business ?

And yes I would definitely consider Island thrift and other student selling the books. What about all the equipment needed ?

This seems like a headache for me ! Help some 1 !

Well said. Wait until you get to the island first. I didn't look at half of the books I got from the Bookstore.
