?s about clinicals

Is ross good with keeping clinical rotations continuous or do they often give students 1 to 2 week gaps in between rotations?

do you get to pick what city you want to do rotations in, or do they decide this for you?

when does the typical ross clinical student take a week off? after 12 rotation weeks, 18 rotation weeks, etc.

and finally, do clinical rotations continue thru the christmas and new years weeks if you want to do them then?

thanks for the help for anyone you responds to this post.

Ah... to answer your questions... NO ross is not good at giving continous rotations... in fact you will have much longer gaps in your schedule than 1-2 weeks... try 4 to 9 weeks... you have to fill those weeks with electives. Yes you can do all your rotations in one city... it is generally easiest to do all of them in new york.. however chicago is another option. And yes rotations run through christmas and new years unfortunately. Hope that all helps... you have to really stay on the clinical department to get your stuff taken care of... it is entirely your responsibility.. the department is completely inept in my opinion.

Completely agree with the inept part. I had a 33 week gap, yes, THIRTY-THREE week gap that I filled with elective after elective. How is a 33 week gap possible? Try getting an ACGME Peds Core...see how many weeks you have to wait.

From what I hear there are often large gaps between most peoples clinical rotations but that doesnt mean it is impossible to do them without a break.

I started clinicals 2 weeks after 5th semester ended (I took the comp during 5th) and then started clinicals and have managed to schedule 57 continuous weeks of rotations with no breaks (this was by my choice because I simple want to get this over with). I have scheduled my electives and if all continues well I will have finished all 90 weeks of clinical rotations with only 1 week off between week 57 and week 58.

As far as getting the holidays off, it is up to you. When I got to chicago I found out which doctors were really laid back about the holidays and got my schedule set up so I had thier rotations during the holidays and I got a week off for thanksgiving and 10 days off for christmas and new years and I still got credit for being there.

In a nut shell it is up to you how it goes and If you want to be picky about your rotations you may have some big gaps. If your not so picky and you do a little foot work and get to know other students in the local hospitals and make friends with the local coordinators you can get what you want.

One final point, it doesnt really matter who you are rotating under, you will get out of the rotation what you put in it. If you preceptor isnt that great of a teacher then get to know the nursing staff or residents and they are often more than happy to teach you if you are willing to learn.

One correction, when I said I took the comp during 5th I meant I took step 1 during 5th and got my score back before 5th was over so I was able to schedule my first rotation in chicago before I left miami.

Didnt catch that until I posted it and then went back and read it.

thanks to all that posted.

i just had one more question. Do you have to finish all your 48 credit core rotations first before Ross sponsors you for step 2?

why do we have to do ALL this just for a rotation ???? a lot of money is being paid both to ross and the hospital for clinicals .. why should we have to go out and MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE LOCAL COORDINATORS to get a rotation ???

As I read this I am bearing in mind that you are a girl ... so yes maybe YOU got what you wanted . I know some people will be upset with me for posting this , But I have personally seen GIRLS get away with a lot and even manage to break rules etc etc ... I'm not saying this is the case with you , its just that I know quite a few people who have problems getting their rotations etc

This is what bothers me . NOT island conditions . I have heard complaint after complaint about the clinical dept . ARe things getting better ? Can someone in clinicals share their experience ?

Bear in mind we have much more students now than before
I thought it was against the policy for students to contact hospitals on their own ...whats next bribes to get rotations ? service exchanges ?))

That is a definite no. In fact, you will find many people, including myself, who took Step 2 before doing a Peds core. As a matter of fact, my Peds core was filled with a bunch of 4th year students finishing up...meaning, virtually every one of us who waited for an ACGME core took our Step 2 ahead of time because Ross could not give us ACGME cores in a timely fashion.

On the other hand, if you did not care about ACGME in every core...and went to Jackson Park or Kern, etc...you could theoretically get the cores done for Step 2.

I tried to avoid the FP umbrella...while others simply did not care.

Acgme

Everyone SHOULD care about ACGME . Why settle for inferior rotations just because the system is allegedly disorganised ?? Why settle ?
And we wonder why SGU has better residencies ? It maybe has to do with the clinical segment ?

considering how much we pay to ross, its really not fair that we have to go through so much red tape to get ACGME cores.

Why dont they have a rotation system going where one group does their cores in the order of ABCD and another does it as BCDA and another CDAB, etc.

why would a school thats been around for ages be so lacking in their clinical department?

its sad. leaves graduates with a bitter taste for their school after graduation
