I use my laptop just for viewing powerpoints, going on the internet and skyping back home. There is no need for a super videocard or huge amounts of RAM. Get yourself a cheaper external Harddrive, you can get one for $200 for 500GB easily so you dont need to worry about a $850 HD. just my 2 cent.
thanks for the info Mustango. but the notebook is the only one i have....same with the HD. i suppose i can purchase a cheapo deepo notebook for 300 and grab an equally cheap HD. is the voltage 110 or 220?

islandthrift thank you for the information as well. can you tell me about how much the protein powder is over there? what i buy here is like 35-40 bucks so is it more than that?

appreciate the help everyone!

Power is 220v but some apartments have supplied 110v while others you need to buy a transformer. MAKES SURE TO BRING A SURGE PROTECTOR!!!! ESPECIALLY if your bringing expensive equipment. As far as price for the protein powder, you're going to have to call the bookstore for the answer to that one but it WILL be more expensive than the price you quoted because they buy it in the US, pay taxes on it and then raise the price to make money on it.

Laptop and notebook, and most of the small electronics like ipod, etc. with Power adapter would work in Dominica and don't need any transformers.

Look at power cable for your lap top - it is the cable which goes from wall outlet and connects to Power Port on your lap top. This power cable has small brick like part - called AC Adapter. Look underneath AC Adapter. It will have various information including INPUT and OUTPUT. What you are interested is INPUT. It should say something like 100 - 240V or 110 - 220V or 100 - 220 V etc. As long as higher number is 220V or 240V your laptop will work on island without the transformer.

But buy surge protector as it will help in preventing damage from voltage surge.

What about a printer?

Is a printer any use or best to leave it at home?

Do you guys think Vonage is a good idea for the island???I know calling from the island could be expensive.

Just looking for some updates on this issue. I know it has been talked about already.

Theres a computer lab to print. You get 140 free copies per week. After that you need to pay to print. The print center can be frustrating at times, but saves you from draggin' a printer from back home.

If you are going to bring a printer (which I really recommend), buy LOTS of ink cartridges and paper. There are printers in the library. However, every student can print MAX 140 pages a week. You definitely rack up more than 140 pages in notes/slides from professors in a week. As far as I know, you cannot pay more to increase your printing allowance. This is what I've been told at the library. Also, when you print, you have to pick up the papers you printed from the print center in the back of the library. The locals that work there are responsible for getting all of the print outs from ALL of the students printing and they have to sort it out and place it on a desk where you can pick them up. Sometimes the locals are very slow, sometimes they aren't even there because they either don't come back from their breaks or they come back late. The printing process here is quite the headache. So, I brought a printer and I print freely at home. I don't have to walk to the library when I need to print anything and I can print however much I'd like.

I made a HUGE list of EVERYTHING that I either shipped or brought with me on the plane and I posted it on my blog. Honestly, I have used EVERYTHING. There isn't a single thing I regret bringing. In fact, there are things I wish I had brought or brought more of. For example, filing boxes, waste baskets (my apt didn't come with any), fly swatter, extension cords, UPS, and power strips.

You can find my packing list under the entry "May As Well Teleport Everything I Own" at
Doctors of the Caribbean

electronics shipping?

about shipping electronics, such as laptop, printers etc... I read that they charge a lot of import tax on them. .. how strict is that (either in luggage or shipping packages?) do they check every item you bring/ship?? and how do they exactly determine the value of it, if they find it in your shipment?

Thanks!

If you bring it with you, the charge is $0. If you ship electronics, it's an arbitrary number that they choose to charge you and there is not much you can do about it.
